Title: W113 Headrest Question
Post by: Ostkurve on May 03, 2008, 19:11:30
I'm in the market for a 280SL. I'm came across this posting this afternoon:http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/car/661627981.html

The car is '68 without headrest. I've never seen a 280SL without headrests,I've seen early 230 & 250SL's without headrests. I was under the impression that headrests were standard & not an option during the later production.

Could the cars have been ordered without headrests new from the dealer?

In addition i knowticed that this vehichle has the later style tail lights with the amber turn signal supplied on the '70 & '71 year models.

In 1968, the headrests were still optional on the US model.

My 68 does not have headrests. The tail lights should be all red. they changed color mid 1969. But check the data card to be sure what options come with the car.

I need to ask one question of you.  Are the seats/leather or MB-TEX original?  If they are not and have been re-upholstered, the possibility of leaving headrest off seats for aesthethics/looks could have happened and the leather/MB-TEX was not cut with holes for headrest post.  I do know that new leathers for seats come with no holes cut.  You must cut them.  This is so that the seatcovers will be compatable to all models in the W113 series and will fit correctly w/holes at proper dimensions for post.  You may remove the seat backs and see if the housings for headrest rods are there.  They screw to the back frame.
