Nice pictures. Now I need to buy a strap! I would only ask for the measurement for the upper screws. Mine has never had a strap (since 1979 at least). In fact I wonder if the earliest cars even had them. There are no holes to indicate mine did. But I do understand their importance -- I have had both a gust of wind and an overzealous mechanic open the "bonnet" too far. Are they still available, anyone?

Michael:
The photos are great but how do we know (if we do know) that the winding shown in the photos is "correct" or "original" or is it just one way to hold the strap? Are there any vintage photos or a service guide for this?

Richard,
The answer is you don't. You are relying on the skills of the restorer. It wasn't me.
BUT, if you look at the way the fabric is wound, it makes sense: as you close the hood (bonnet) the fabric self-folds in back of the battery, NOT trying to work its way outside.
Doesn't make it right, it makes it sensible. That's the way he did it; it works, and you are the first person to bring it up.

thank you so much for the nice pictures-looks like a nice car also

My car has the strap installed like the photos show with one exception: the strap winds one complete turn around the brackets before being secured behind the brackets like in the pictures. This insures that it cannot be yanked out from behind the bracket by a sudden gust of wind. The car is unrestored so I would venture that this may be the way it came originally. I'll snap a picture and post it for you.

Now THAT is an engine compartment to aspire to! I'm still trying to locate correct replacements for the mismatched screws and bolts here and there.
That is a real beauty.

Mark,
Whenever I replace nuts, bolts, screws, etc. I always attempt to use stainless steel. The exception to this would be something very "structural" that would require a stronger bolt; I can't think of anything off the top of my head but I'm certain there are some "grade 8" fasteners somewhere on the car (maybe just the engine) and in that case that's what I would use. Stainless is relatively weak and while great for small things, they don't bolt an engine together with it.
As for mere cosmetic or non-structural, stainless is what I have sourced and used. Places like all these sheet metal screws, trim screws, small machine screws, even larger things like those that hold on the bumpers. Trust me that either you or your mechanic at some point in the future will be happy you used stainless. I also use silver grade anti-seize.
One great source for small quantities of all kind of fasteners is your local nut and bolt store. Brafasco is a chain with locations around the central midwest and Ontario. There are others, I'm sure, near you. Search Yahoo yellow pages or similar, and you are bound to find an industrial fastener store near you.
Mail order, I have used the following:
http://www.boltdepot.com/metric-machine-screws.aspx
http://www.fastener-express.com/
and my all time favorite for cool stuff:
http://www.smallparts.com/
One by one as I do any work, those zinc fasteners get replaced with stainless.
Thanks for the compliments on the engine bay. I didn't do it. I just maintain it...now where's that rag... ;)

Michael,
Thanks for the pictures of the strap, it looks great along with the rest of the engine. Also, thanks for the links, I enjoy finding sites like that. Here's one that I have used for ss fastners:

My car, which the previous owner was meticulous about maintaining originality, is exactly the same as Michael's pictured below.

I replaced my strap and bracket about a year or so ago. The original one was attached as described by Mike Hughes. When redoing it with the new strap I was unable to wrap it do to the thickness of the material.

Hello James (Huber),
Our early 230ies didn't came with the hood strap.
This started from any (not soo) early VIN on.
My recommendation: Put it in! It's really necessary and worth the investment & leaving the utmost originality.
The strap is still available at Daimler's but I don't know the number & current price. It's not expensive.

Thanks Achim. I can always count on you! I will likely add it within the year. Is is very painful to see the hood go up to far. This and a new data plate will also help clean-up an otherwise so-so engine bay.

James,
M-B now only sells white straps but you can buy the original tan colored straps from Dave Gallon (see vendors list) and the material is thin enough to be wrapped around the metal bar as shown in Mike's picture. Not expensive either! :)

Achim,
I am curious. The spare parts list [Ersatzteilliste] Edition C shows the strap and there is no remark [Bemerkung] indicating that the strap was added "from chassis 00xxxx".
Do you know whether such remarks are only printed when an existing part was changed to another one but not when a new part - that never existed before - was added?

James,
I assume you that you have the torsion bar for the hood and its bracket? And what you are missing is the lower bracket (p/n 113 887 0114) that fixes the strap to the torsion bar bracket, plus the upper bracket (p/n 113 887 0214), correct?
Both of these are NLA and you may have to buy a repro from SLS (or from Gernold) or ask Joe A, or Dr.Benz, or Dave whether they have old parts.

Not to hi-jack this thread but can anyone tell me what type and size of screw is used to secure the strap to the hood? Mine has a machine screw but it looks to me like it should had a sheet metal screw instead as my hood does not have a threaded hole or anything that would accomodate a machine screw.

Mike,
have checked my car and on the upper bracket there is a sheet metal screw, about a #10 with blunt end.
The lower bracket needs a 6mm x 1.00 machine screw.

Hello Alfred,
You are right, this specific parts introduction (hood strap) is not indicated in the parts list. I don't know exactly why but perhaps because especially the last list (Edition C as of Jan 1967) only lists serials when these are typical and critical to the car's integrity. Parts or replaced parts (or added items) which are/were not critical to an earlier car are just mentioned generally (i.e. not from serial xxx on).
Engelen ("Vom Barock zur Pagode") mentioned this change. It was introduced on serial 001339 on 09 Dec 1963 (if I rmember that now correctly...)
Best,
