Title: Seat Hand Wheels (early type) for 230SL
Post by: franjo_66 on March 19, 2008, 20:01:17
Hi Folks

I have been trying to source a set of seat hand wheels (for both seats) for my 1966 230SL. These are different to the later style for the late 230SL/250SL/280SL.

Not having much luck finding a good used set. Does anyone know whether it would be feasible to modify the later style seat hand wheels to fit onto my seat mechanism ? Has anyone had to follow this path ?

Finding the early type is a tough cookie.  A friend of mine looked for 'years'.  He finally ended up buying a pair of seats from Ebay and told the seller to just send the hand wheels over without the seat!

The later ones can be used.  They were on my friend's 64 230SL until he found the ones mentioned above.  Can't give any guidance as to how though, neither can my friend - his garage did it for him.  All I know is that it should work.  Good luck.

Hi Frank,

You can use the front quarter door window turn knobs from the W110/111 fintail series which look identical externally.

The center arrangement of the knob needs to be "adapted" to the rod mechanism of the SL seat's backrest (you will see what I mean once you have it in your hands).
It's available from new from your local MB dealer, any 110 723 -xxxx number (which I currently forgot).
Not too expensive though (around $$ 10 or so).

Good luck!

Hi Eryck

Thanks for the reply. I have seen other earlier 230SLs with the later style hand wheels. So either they have modified the internals or adapted the whole setup (ie shaft, etc) from a 250/280SL

If it works, maybe you could tell us how you did it with a few photos.

I own a 1968 280SL. The black kurled backrest recliner knobs are avilible, but wouldn't you know it the center trim rings part # 110 190 0018 are discontinued. I am having a hard time locating replacements. if you see some even with some seats please let me know.
