Title: Data Plate missing by left shock tower
Post by: perry113 on March 09, 2008, 20:21:51
Has any one been able to take the data card (build sheet) which can be supplied by Mercedes Classic (refer to recent thread) and recreate the metal data card under the hood by the left side front shock tower.

I'm missing my metal tag. I would like to recreate a tag with the proper coding. I think I should be able to take it off the data card build sheet.

Here is is an example of a metal data tag (108 chassis) for reference along with the data card for my car.

Thanks
Peter

Looks like Paul and Pete are discussing two different plates...

Paul's looks like the plate on the passenger side (right side)of the Firewall of earlier cars and some later Euro cars...this plate is printed with information and has blank spaces to stamp the data about weight and seating capacity.

Peter's photo shows the plate attached to the top of the driver side (left side) fender...this is a blank embossed plate with no printed pattern. This plate shows major option codes, paint codes, job number, etc. but does not have weight or seating data.

This plate is described in detail in our Technical Manual, Data Cards and Codes, under "Body and Paint Number Plate".
In recreating this plate as accurate as possible, I would make it four lines:

420 493
670 H  670 H  6
113042 12   7
- 00591   03541

I think the data plate Peter is referring to is the one that tells the color codes. It is screwed on the inner left side fender. I think if you can get the information you need Peter, the Gentelman who reproduces the Vin plates could make you one and then you are set.

I think the first step is finding what information was supposed to be on that plate. Does anyone have any commment as a way to use the Data card of vin number to trace what Peter is missing?

Mine is missing also.

I have already decoded the numbers from the data card.

All I need is someone to emboss the numbers on a similar plate.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Harry,
Sounds like you figured out how to decode the factory data card and take that info needed to properly recreate your tag. That's what I need to do.
I have the tools to emboss them, however the numbers would be punched from the top. (The factory tags were punched from the backside with backwards punches).
Gernold at SL Tech said these reverse punches to his knowledge as of a year ago don't exist on the planet.
If you can help me properly decode the data for my car. I will gladly make one for yor car.
Here is my build sheet. I'm assuming everything is in the build card from the factory that can be somehow punched out on the metal tag located by the left front shock tower.
Thanks everyone. This forum is a joy to participate in.

Peter:

I think I have the codes correctly for the card you showed.

Please send me an e-mail so that I may send you the info.
