Hi,
After 40 years the original coil went away and had to be replaced. The MB dealer said that the original coil is no longer made and substituted another one. Can someone verify the part number as a correct coil for the motor and distributer. The cap contacts have gotten burnt and I am not sure why.

Hello, Bill,
Part #000-158-28-03 is the later coil for the transistorised ignition system and NOT suitable for your cast iron '051' distributor.
My choice would be the Bosch 'RED' coil MB part # 000 158 49 03 (Bosch 0 221 119 030).
To use this, you would also have to change the ballast resistor to 1.8 ohm (with a red band) MB part # 000 158 1745 (Bosch 0 227 901 014 or Beru WZ 18-2).
P.S: The original Bosch Black Coil is no longer listed but there is a Beru equivalent: ZS 115 to use with the current 0.9 ohm resistor.
Also, treat the car to a new cap and rotor and check HT leads and ends for correct resistance. [:p]

Thank you for your reply. With your information I went back to MB and after an afternoon of checking the coil part #'s it turns out the MB parts computer this dealer is using has all 68 280SL with transistorized ignition. The early 68's were using up the old 250 parts so that a 250 coil is what should have been sold to me The resistor is ok and is the correct resistance for this coil. I show this car in judged shows so I had to stay away from the red coil. The classic center made the same mistake.
The installation should be finished in a day or two, happy days ahead.

Naj, why do you recommend using the 1.8 ohm over the original .9 ohm set up. Is the 1.8 ohm a better spark? I have an original .9 ohm orange top coil that needs replacement. I am trying to keep it as original as possible but if there is a "factory" upgrade then so be it.

Welcome!
The original set-up (upto 1969) is a black coil in conjunction with a 0.9 ohm ballast resistor.
AFAIK, Bosch do not do the black coil any longer (an equivalent Beru coil is still available).
MB have superceded the black coil to a red coil (higher kva) and the matching ballast resistor for that coil is 1.8 ohms.
