I have a 1964 built in 1963 230sl. Does anyone have a photo of the correct seat belts and how they fastened in the car?

Hi John, the fact is the early cars didn't have seat belts. Many here have added them using the mounting points of the later cars that did have them. Do a search and you should find some helpful information. Most add the three point belts which are clearly the safest solution. Mine are lapbelts -- which my upholstery guy easily added while redoing my interior. Better than nothing, I suppose.

I had thought that they were an option on the early cars. I do have places to mount them on the floor. Was that intended for the seat belts?

These are the belts on my '66, I have every reason to believe they are original. The hooks attach to a U shaped part that is held to the floorboards with two fasteners.

Yes Paddy, I agree they look original. And, yes, seatbelts did become an option (number 431 -- Sicherheitsgurte vorn). I am not certain, however, it was an option from day one. Maybe someone with Engelen could have a look? Or maybe Achim might know?

Seeing that seat belts were an option on the prior model 190 SL, I would think they would have been an option on the 113. You'd have to find the dealer option book to find out for sure.

Hey John L -- that does make sense. Maybe what I took for "they didn't come with belts" is really "they didn't come with belts unless you ordered them..." I'd love to be set straight on this if anyone can confirm. In the meantime, John S -- if you have the mounts, I'd go for it. I recall strapping into some Kangols -- it was cool.

Mine's an early 230SL also. I decided for once to do it right. I found that my car DOES have a threaded boss in the upper tower just behind the door opening, and holes in the transmission tunnel, but no provision for mounting the takeup reel at the seat bottom near the door at each side.
I found a source posted on eBay for a beautiful set, fully retractable, and clearly designed for this application. It comes with everything you need, including plated weld-plates with threaded bosses to weld as desired for placement of the retract reel.

I'm going to place mine on the forward side of the rear tower (facing the door opening) so that the reel doesn't inhibit aft seat adjustment. I particularly like the rigid-but-flexible female receiver end, which will eliminate a major frustruation I find in several of my other vintage cars, so you don't have to go searching for the belt receiver each time you buckle up.
I purchased these from a ebay vender with seller ID of agas0967, but I see no current listings from them. I thought the price was reasonable at $340 including shipping (this about 4 months ago) and they do appear to be german quality. The company is:

The options list from May '64 shows seatbelts option # 43/1 for DM 110. [Ed. This is the earliest options list I have reference to. This implies, but does not prove that the option was available from near or at the onset of production.... since the 1st car's were produced for deliverable production beginning in Apr '63, and only 51 chassis were built before start of July '63.]
On May 5, '64 beginning with 230SL Chassis # 3591 all seat shells were fitted with holes to attach seat-belt buckle "holder". [Ed. I am personally unaware of a 'holder' for the seat belt buckle... literally the translation is for holes for "belt buckles" (anschnall guertes).]
Production year '64 for the Export W113's started on Oct 1, '63 with Chassis # 529.
The fastening points at the floor locations were modified for the 3-point seat belts fastening on Mar 18, '66 on the 230SL Chassis # 15693
The fastening plates on the floor locations were increased to 2.5mm starting with the 250SL on Chassis # 20, on Dec 14, '66.

My car is number 671 built in 63 and exported in October 64. It had 3 point belets in it however I suspect they were added in 71 since there is a date on the tag. Probably a dealer option. If we conclude that there was no option for seat belts in 63 and 64 which would be more appropriate for a dealer option a lap belt or a 3 point belt. One last question. Did the Kangols match the interior color or where they all black. John

The picture is of my lap belts. I scavenged the roller from a junkyard to make them "semi-automatic" I think they were both black at one time, one is just faded more than the other.

The belts on my 66 230SL are exactly the same as Paddy shows, even down to the style of the webbing, buckles, and attaching clips, except that they are beige/tan to match my interior. However they clip to what appears to be a heavy cast eye-ring with a threaded shaft that screws into the factory fitting in the body, Something like this: 0-- They also have an ingenious little wire clip on the free end of the strap to help manage the excess belt material one gets when snugging up one's belt.

Thank you for your response. You answered two questions the second is should they match the interior color. Yours being red I would guess so. I am not sure what the U shaped part looks like and if I could find them? Any thoughts? John

I think my anchor is the same as Mike's. I just took a picture of it, I was not describing it very well previously.
And, yes, the belts are matched to my interior color.
