Title: Red Painted Engine Block -250SL
Post by: JPMOSE on February 26, 2008, 08:57:22
My 250 engine is original and never rebuilt.  The cast iron block is a red color...is this normal?

Interior is certainly red:

But I believe exterior too before its repainted black:

OK...so paint has worn off.  Well painting it black will have to wait until the engine is pulled some day (if ever).

I have a 42K mile 69 280SL and its engine block is red. I know it has never been out of the car and is completely original.

Just to add another voice to this: my 65 230SL engine is original too and shows traces of red under fading oil stains and remnants of black paint.

I agree that the Red was the original color of the primer, followed by a satin Black top coat.
