Title: Body plate

Could anybody help me read or decode my Body Plate (the one on the left side under the hood. It reads as follows (G maybe 6):
717 G 7G 6
113043 10 46
00283 0007
Any homepages where I can decode this or??

You can check out www.oursl.com for information about the body plate. The top numbers refer to the paint code, I do no have a table of the paint codes, but there are a number of places, Meredith's book among them where they are listed. Also www.paintscratch.com has a pretty good list, 717 is the code they list for papyrus white.
The next numbers are the car code -113, 043 designates the 250 SL, the 10 designates manual transmission. (just as the 10 in the VIN plate)the last number is the body number which should also be stamped on the top edge of the hood, the hardtop, and the convertible top cover.

Note: The body number does not match up with the last numbers of the VIN. This number should also be stamped on the right side front subfram, under the intake runners.

You have an early 250, mine is 1344.

Mulrik,
You have a very early 250SL!!  I think you are missing a couple digits on the first line.  It should be:
nnn G nnn G x
 - as in -
717 G 717 G 6

The first line means:
body color code (717)
body color manufacturer (G=Glasurit, H=Herberts)
hard top color code (3 digits, so I don't know why you just have a single digit)
hard top color manufacturer
I don't know what the 6 means

The second line means:
Chassis (113=Pagoda, 043=250SL)
Steering/Transmission (10=LHD/Manual, 12=LHD/Auto, 20=RHD/Manual, 22=RHD/Auto)
I don't know what the 46 means

The third line means:
Production Number (283=Internal production tracking number - matches number stamped in hood, hard top, soft top cover.)
I'm not sure what the remainder of the line means

The fourth line means:
Factory options, usually radio codes.  See our data page.

You're welcome.  I never have been able to find out what the last digit in the first line means, and some of the third line is still a mystery as well.  Perhaps I will write to the Classic Center!
