Title: Odds & Ends - Rubber Bumpers and Bulb
Post by: awolff280sl on January 26, 2008, 18:17:33
1. Are supposed to be 3 rubber bumpers (with a bolt in each one) securing the air canister? If so, where do they go?
2. The passenger side cowl vent drain pipe empties so close to the exhaust and body that it seems impossible to fit that rubber bulb thing on the end of it. What's with this?

On my 230 there are 3 of the rubber shock/vibration resistant mount things you mention. It is actually a piece of rubber with a threaded stud in each end, rather than a bolt through a large piece of rubber. Two of them secure the sides of the air filter housing to the car and one of them goes on the bottom of the housing near the drain hole. This bottom one is secured to the frame and on my car the securing nut is reached by going under the car. They are easy enough to replace. Use a spring washer or lock nut to stop them vibrating off.
SLS has them for 6 euros.

That's my project for tonight.  Replace all the "Gummipuffern" to secure the air filter with new units from Buds'. I was unable to find the "right" Blue lock washer and yellow cad plate nuts, zinc will have to do for this time...slow and steady.

On an early 280SL you have two of the rubber mounts that James shows in the inside of the opening holding the canister, a simple rubber buffer/plug at the bottom and a special bracket with a special grommet that attaches the canister to the fender wall.  The latter two are different from James' 230SL!!
