This is a really interesting vehicle. As I mentioned in another thread, the plate in the engine compartment shows a 230 SL with production #00001.
I have no idea what the belts are for under the tonneau cover, but they look to be later aftermarket belts.
You can also see that the interior has been re-done since it has the later multi-loop carpets and headrests.
Can you share any pix of the exterior? Also, do you have the data card?

A thought - those belts in the soft top box could have been used to compress and hold the softtop in place when the top was down. There have been some posts on this site about owners who have had to use a method of compressing the frame in order to close the soft top box and belts have been mentioned as a means of so doing. If this were the case, then clearly the male end of the belt might have gone astray.

I remember reading in an old MB sales brochure that those seatbelts were to hold down your mother-in-law.

ya, The carpet looked too good for me to think it was origional. The car has been repainted. The previous owner had done a few weird things, like the antenna mast on the trunk, vinyl along the dash. The engine bay is also black, it should be white along with the body correct? same with the wheel wells? I dont have a data card, but I saw that page on how to get one. It didnt say if you have to pay or not though, if you do how much is it? Thanks

Also 250 is stamped on the engine, and the engine number suggests from a page I saw that its out of a 250 sedan. Is there anywhere on the car that would show the original engine number?

Doug,
the production number is an assembly-line scheduling number and is repetitive (rolling over, and/or starting at 1 every new year). The car's serial number is not 000 001 (some documentation of that car is in our Technical Manual, under Data Cards, Vehicle Identification Number).
John Mancini,
the Body and Paint Number Plate Jon M (717-113) shows in his photo above also shows 5 as market designation, i.e. the car was originally sold in Europe except Germany. Jon's profile does not list where he resides. But the car could have been sold and registered for a long time in a country where mother-in-laws are usually transported in the trunk or softtop-compartment. Since I don't want to step on anybody's toes, I'll not suggest any country.

Thank you, Klaus. I knew the production number wasn't the same as the VIN, but I didn't realize it's reset every year. I've never seen a #1.
(And by the way, why was my first posting deleted? I clearly said "Production Number 00001" and not Serial Number or VIN.)
No fee required to get a data card. I'd definitely get one for this vehicle.
Also, lift up the carpeted parcel shelves and check out what's under there. I'll bet you'll find the two male pieces to those seatbelts. They look to be crude shoulder belts rigged up for passengers sitting back there.

So mines saying its the first of the year? Or that it had just rolled over? based on the VIN and another table I saw, it suggested that the car was made in April. I live in B.C. Canada, and papers in the car date back to 1984ish, not too sure when the car was imported.

Hi Klaus,
I'm in the US. I'll try putting her in the trunk. It was getting harder to close the convertible top lid with her weight gain. Thanks for the tip.
