Anybody have a picture of what the battery hold down looks like on a 68 280SL. Also, are the parts still available? My battery just sits on the battery tray loose.
Thanks in a advance.

Anyone know why MB hasn't gone to a mainenance-free battery?

Very good pictures John Thank you. Is this part still available? If so, does anyone have a part #?
Thanks again,

They have, but show cars get points docked for using them :?:

Naj, Thanks very much. I'll get these ordered. I do not care for aftermarket, anything goes parts for these old cars. As noted in my signature line, I also have several GM cars that have all the factory equipment that is visible to the eye. Goodies are hidden.

The battery pictured is the recommended M-B replacement for the original Varta battery supplied when our SLs were new and still has the filler caps. It runs about $160. It is different from the modern maintenance-free batteries M-B supplies for the modern models and has to be ordered in from the Classic Center. MBCA Concours judges will deduct points if something other than an M-B battery is fitted.
I just had to replace the 8 year old M-B battery in my 230SL. They ordered it at 4:30 in the afternoon and called me at 11:00 the next morning to say it was in! The only difference between this one and the one that finally lost its "oomph" is that the old one had a slightly different part number and still had a "Varta" label on top. Curiously enough, when the parts guy at the M-B dealer across the street was looking up the battery for me he discovered another part number for an M-B rubber-case replacement battery that only runs $669.00! You should have seen his jaw drop! Lord knows if it is actually available, and I wasn't about to ante up the $$$ to find out! That seems a bit stiff a price to pay for authenticity, but on the other hand those who have to have original pattern firewall padding for their early model 230SLs may need to get one! ;^)

This may come as a sureprise next time you order a Merceddes Battery from your dealer. the manufactor is Interstate who also supply Lexus with there batterys. Moral of the story go to your local interstate battery dealer and pick up the battery at ahlf price and ready to go. Thee dealer does not supply the acid for the battery and charge it.

I'm not surprised at all that MBUSA would source M-B labeled batteries from a good domestic supplier like Interstate. However, the M-B battery I bought for my Pagoda two weeks ago for Christmas was topped up and fully charged when I picked it up.
