Title: Ballast resistor and Coil
Post by: 230slhouston on December 27, 2007, 12:06:55
Hello all,
Does anyone know the part number for the coil and ballast resistor for a 230sl (1966)?
My resistor has Bosch part number 1 224 509 053, I cannot find this at any parts store. Autohaus has 1 224 509 050, 0.9 ohm.
The coil I have is black, no number on it. I only see red ones available.

Does the resistor ever go bad?

Also, will NGK BP6ES work, I cannot get W7DC plugs.

Thanks
MB.

Hi MB. I have had very good results with the red coil and and a 1.8 ohm ballast resistor. Don't have the numbers right now but somebody here will. Also, yes NGKs work fine -- some claim even better than the Bosch. I use BP5ES.

James,
Do you have a part number for the 1.8 ohm resister, I only seem to find 0.9 ohm resistors.

Thanks for your help.

Hey MB. I think its 0227901014. That's what I have written down.

That is the Bosch number. Not sure if there is a corresponding MBZ one. My coil reads 0 221 119 030 KW.

James,
Thank you. I find both part numbers online. I can now order these parts.

Thanks

MB,

Several suppliers, including Millers, have a "full line" of resistors; I bought several different resistances in Beru brand in 2005.

Yes the resistor can go bad; the ceramic can crack leaving the resistance wire exposed which can then break.  Also there are electrical conditions that will and can cause it to burn out.

I've been running NGK BP6ES for some time now.

Do a search of this site, I believe there have been several threads on Ballasts and Coils.

Mercedes coil, part# A 000 158 49 03. Beru Resistor part# 0110.520.001.00.01. This is the "red coil and correct resistor. It is what was sold to me as correct anyways, and has worked fine for several years now in my '66 230SL.
