Title: Distributer lubrication

Hello Everyone.just doing a lubrication service on my 230 auto,can someone tell me what the oil on the felt pad and in the little covered hole in the side with the twist cover actualy lubricates       Many thanks and merry Christmass to you all. Cheers Mike Rutledge

Engine oil.
Not too much, just a couple of drops on the felt pad so its soaking wet (which you can let drip from the engine dipstick [:p])

The top wick lubricates the cam that sits on top of the main shaft. I've seen them seize up from lack of service.
 The oil cup on the side of the distributor oils the top and bottom bearing. The top bearing will wear out much faster than the bottom one and it needs a little bit of oil once in a while. The oil hole goes right through the top bearing and the oil will leak down to a felt wick that sits between the top and bottom bearings. If it gets dry enough the top of the shaft can start to wear but the metal is very hard so it takes a long time.
The new replacement bearings are made out of a bronze alloy and should last a long time. This material is similar to what is used in valve guides while the original bearings are steel.
