Title: I Have to buy new tires and a couple of rims
Post by: 64sl_robs on November 18, 2007, 17:50:21
I Have to buy new tires and a couple of rims for an early '64 230 sl.
I took the top off and went out for a moonlit drive nice i guess that's why i bought it. put the car back in the garage and a few days later i had one flat and one going -OLD dry rotted tires (5 different brands of tires! the spare is even a bias ply)
at least they waited till i got home - gotta like that!
I read most of the posts on tire sizes and was wondering what the current advice is. the guy i like to buy my tires from sells michelin and bf goodrich and the profile seemed low.

after removing the (incorrect tho in nice condition)full wheelcovers i found i had 3 different model rims. 2 rims had 3 pins and the #'s 1/64, 5 1/2 J X 14, 14004M, 113400 0006 -- i am guessing these are original.
2 other rims have 3 nubs pressed into the hub near the lugs i think these might be slightly newer- too over painted/ dirty to get the #'s clearly.
and the last rim is even more modern with a date code of 4/72 no pins or nubs
what is available out there for rims?? i like the original cap and ring better than the full wheel cover but are they still to be found at a reasonable price??
i have to buy tires and would like to do a decent /correct job on the rim situtation.
any and all help appreciated
thanks rob

Hello Rob,

Sounds like you have a complete selection of all various steel rims used on the W113s. The rims with the pins are the most difficult to find since they were only used on the 230SL #113 400 00 06. The rim with the pressed shape are the next version and will accept either the full wheel covers or the two piece. These can be found on the early W108 sedans of the era and should be more easily found, look for this number #108 400 00 02. The 250S, SE and the early 280S, SE sedans should have these.

Hello Rob,

No problem Rob, the wife married into this.  The Mercedes thing was way out of control long before we met. (1200 sq. ft house with 1800 sq. ft. garage on three acres) You can see where the priorities are!

I've just added lots of info from this board to the Wheels and Tires (http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=WheelsTires.Start) section of the Technical Manual (http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php). Although not yet complete, many part numbers can be found here and a very complete section on Alloy wheels.

We can still use more help putting this manual together!

...oh, and for those that have NOT been to Mary and Joe's--did he fail to mention just how much of that 3 acres (aside from the garage) is covered with Mercedes cars and parts?? ;)

Hi All
I was buying tires for my early 64 230 sl and i have 2 bent rims
they wobble.  I need to buy at least 2 (preferably) early rims.

the tires i am buying are Uniroyal AS6000 195/175 SR 14 's
they are about the right size and are being discontinued and are only $59.00 each. The same size Michelin is $118.00.
my tires were really bad and this is an improvement so if you are running old dry rotted tires and hadn't bought new yet due to the expense ...
