Need the 'facts' on a 1980 280SL, 2.8 litre dual overhead cam engine(same as the 280CE vintage), two door coupe, two tops, etc. Is this a Euro, etc?
-
Yes, it's a Euro 107 with an injected version of the M110 twin-cam.

Glennard, I owned a 280SL (W107) in Germany when I worked over there. What a great engine, and what power, ran 185kmh/115mph all day long on autobahn. Point to remember, this was a "gray market" import, parts are widely available both here and in Germany, and with the euro production, no factory installed EPA requirements, means more hp.

Glennard,
280SL, W107 has gobs more power than the US aspirated (smogged)450SL.
Drove both of them and the 280 outaccelerated the 450 several times from starts.
The 280 had big fat slicks on the rear and chirped the tires in each gear change (auto).

When, if ever, did the '80 280SL Euro get smogged? Did the '78 280CE US have complete US EPA anti-smog gear?
-
Hopefully, the 1980 280SL did not get modified using 1980 technology. From the first use of catalysts in 1974, to MY 1980, emission control technology on Mercedes gasoline vehicles was bad and resulted in high fuel consumption and large power loss. Only with the introduction of the three-way-catalyst with oxygen sensor in MY 1981 things improved dramatically.
I would never consider buying a Mercedes gasoline US version vehicle built 1974 to 1980.

Klaus, What modifications to the 280 do I look for? vacuum switches, sensors, wiring, etc?
-
glennard, if not "federalized", it would not have a catalyst, only the muffler.
On the other hand, if it was a grey market car which was federalized, the paperwork with the release from both EPA and NHTSA should accompany the car.
