Hi,
A few questions for the forum. I'm trying to find out what books make up a complete set of books for a 280SL, specifically a 1971 model year. I'm also interested in learning what tools make up a complete tool roll kit and jack set. Does anyone have pictures they can share?

I did a search on "toolkit" in the general discussion area, looking only at the title. In scrolling through the first hit, there are a number of references to the toolkit for our cars. There is also a photo of the auxiliary toolkit.
Here is a list from a previous post (thanks Douglas)with a few additions:
-owner's manual (dated accordingly)
-service booklet (stamped with VIN)
-dealer list (US & Int'l)(the US version was published quarterly I believe and is like a pamphlet, there are several different world region booklets i.e. amerika, germany, etc.)
-seatbelt instructions
-Becker radio packet (usually with antenna key for manual Hirschmann)
-metal embossed owner's plate
-pink data card with original factory configuration indicated
-soft top manual
-113 parts book
-lt brown vinyl pouch
-car care booklet (I have only seen these in German)

I have 280SL #000176. It was built in November 1967 and apparently came with a 250SL manual. At least, that's what was in the brown vynil pouch when I bought the car. My assumption has always been that the car was so early in line that they didn't have the 280 manuals printed yet. Anyone have an idea whether or not may assumption is correct?

Check the date on the book. It's printed on the backside of the cover in tiny print. That's probably a good place to start.

My 68 280sl, #1084 came with a 250sl-280sl owner's manual. I believe both cars were being built and sold in 1968, hence the dual model owner's manual.

I was at a car show earlier this month where there was a vendor selling literature. Among his literature were a 280SL owners manual, (dated April 1968) and a small format 250SL/280SL parts book with a medium dark brown cover, both from the same car that the vendor owned many years ago. I suspect that there was some phased-in overlap of the literature for early 280SLs. Stirling Moss can probably take some credit for the accelerated development and introduction of the 2.8L variant and the literature folks probably just had to play catch-up!

I am traveling and not able to check the different numbers and such for the parts book. There are a number of different books that cover the range from 230 through 280. They have a number in the top right corner of the cover (format 12XXX)that also correlates with the big parts books (with the full part numbers). These books are numbered 10XXX.
There are also reprints that confuse the issue even more, since the reprint might ahve 230SL on the cover, but really not have all the right parts shown.

Although my question was aimed at a '68 250SL, I really don't believe there are any differences.
Tool rolls show up on Ebay all the time. You may want to do a search to get a feel on the pricing. As I recall, I paid around $160 for a mint set. Mine looks just like the following, which I think someone paid way too much for:
