I'm trying to take out my cigarette lighter to figure out why it doesn't work. I've searched thru the forum and see information about what to check out if it doesn't work but not anything about how to get it out of the panel. I had the radio out but can't see what is holding the lighter unit in the panel. How do you get the lighter unit out of the panel?
I don't smoke but just want to get the lighter working.
Thanks,
Otto

The cigarette lighter is held into the dash by a "U" bracket from behind.
The ground lug of the plug first needs to be threaded off of the mounting stud, then remove the 14mm(?) nut that holds the bracket, then the lighter should slip out the front of the dash.

Otto,
I had the same problem. Al's description may be helped by the attahched photo, which is a strip down of the parts. Note the lug that Al described that unscrews.
Mine didn't work because the lighter was shorting out. I needed to rebuild it insulating (I think) the central element from the sides where it was touching. (This assumes you have current to the lighter in the first place). It's a pretty easy job. Good luck.

Thanks Al and Thanks James for the picture.
I hope to get the car back out of the garage in the next couple of days and I'll see if I can get the lighter out and fixed.
