Title: Found images of SL 280 with luggage rack
Post by: Saltydog on August 26, 2007, 06:40:02

Please find images of roof rails and a roof rack I found after extensive research. No one seems to be making these anymore and there appear to be few on the second hand market. There's a guy in Melbourne but he's trying to sell them from crazy prices and he want's you to pick them up. I'm going to investigate fabricating a fitting. None of the modern fittings seem to work.

Salty,

How crazy are the prices being asked?  Can you give us a range?  My guess is he wants over $1,500+ USD for the ski racks and $3,000 USD for the luggage rack.  In my opinion, the luggage rack and luggage are the two most rare accessories for the car.  Luggage rack more rare than luggage.  Do others have an opinion?

You may have a point here, Tom. The luggage was generic Mercedes luggage, so it was the same basic luggage for all Mercedes at that point. You just ordered the pieces that fit your model. In fact, here's a photo of the luggage from the 1967 Special Equipment Brochure that shows a 108 sedan and its large trunk divorced of its contents:

In any event, both the luggage and the luggage rack are extremely rare, so we're probably splitting hairs here.  :)

Point made €1500 is not so expensive but it's the flight over to pick it up that could be quite tasty! I'll have to save up for the next one I see. Although having seen the mail from Douglas it looks like the trunk is big enough to move house in: 5 suitcases and a hat box no less! Ryanair eat your heart out!
