Title: Speedometer Woes

I was trying to change out the speedometer cable. I found that the flange where the cable enters the transmission is broken. The piece that broke off is missing so the PO must have broke it and just ignored the problem. Is this part available? How hard is it to replace?

Speaking of POs, he "fixed" the speedometer  cable by fabricatinf an end out of copper and splicin the outer sheathing with a piece of hose and hose clamps. The sheathing for tach cable was held together with duct tape. Maybe I should start a worst Previous owner thread!!!!

daryl,
so I actually broke the same part on my tranny.  I was able to save the part and re connect the cable.

when I sent the tranny out for rebuild the replaced the part.

to answer your question, yes the part can be replaced, the question is can it be done with the tranny in the car.

sun valley hydraulics may be able to sell you the part.

I would doubt it; I believe it is part of a larger housing section, although I could be wrong. Either way, the quarters that it is in are so tight that it would seem necessary to create extra room before being able to do anything of significance.

the p/n for the bearing body is 112 270 0113 and should be available from M-B.
SLS sells it for about 300 Euros.
How hard is it to replace? I took a picture of one of Joe's old transmissions showing the clamp and the gear assembly and it looks like that you'll have to remove the tranny to get to it.

Bob Possel had the same issue and he replaced his without removing the trans. He got a good used part.

Thanks for the information. I have 2 additional questions

When looking for a used one, is this part limited to 113s with 4 speed or are there some sedans that have a part that can fit?

Do you know if there wasanything special Bob Possel did to change the part with the tranny in the car?

The speedo drive number and the pics posted are for an automatic.

The rear cover on a stick shift car has thrust shims behind it that hold the transmission gears in alignment. Once the transmission tunnel plate is removed to get the cover off, it wouldn't be a whole lot more work to pull the trans completly out. then you could do the work on the bench where it is easier.

Do you have the tab that is broken off?
If so we could try to weld it back on to the tail housing, It's already broken, so it couldn't hurt to try.

All the stick shift sedans up to 1968 have the same gear box.
People usually don't part them out though just sell the whole box, Besides the broken speedo drive tab is fairly common, so finding a good one might be a problem.  They were usually broken from trying to pry the cable out of the housing with a screwdriver.

Call if you could use a hand getting this fixed.

So did I. If not, then in time the p/n might be of use for an owner with an automatic transmission.

The car is a 4 speed. The piece is missing, but the bolt was in place. I am surprised he did not try some JB weld and use the bolt to hold the other piece on.

Anyone know the part # for a 4 speed and is that available?

SLS shows the part is available at 165 euros.  Their number is 226225 and the MB part number is 111 260 04 16.  I broke mine and had it welded as shown in the pic.  It's aluminum btw.

I found one used for $50 so I ordered it. May wait for cooler weather and then replace clutch etc when I work on it
