We were on a charity poker run this past weekend and we were fortunate enough to meet another Pagoda :D . This '69 280SL was purchased about a year and a half ago by the owner of our city's MB dealership and went through restoration. They have put 400 hours plus body work, paint, rechrome (is that the right word?), parts and love into it. Sorry we did not take more pic's. In a passing conversation, it was mentioned that if it was for sale, which it isn't, the asking price would be $100,000 CDN :) .

$100,000 Canadian sounds awfully rich - even if the car would be in perfect, as new condition with all original parts, I don't think you would get more than US$50,000 for it.
My level of expertise is limited, but I am currently restoring a 69 280SL and have been told that one I am done and it is in 1- condition I won't be able to get more than US$30.000-$35,000 for it.
Having said this, I would love to hear other members experiences with this ...

Patrick,
Which Pagoda is it we're talking about in your pix? The red one or the blue one?

Well, it is possible that the owner simply did an "open checkbook" no-holds-barred restoration and would need to get that much for it just to break even. Nobody has ever said that restoring a Pagoda is inexpensive!

Douglas, it is the red one, the blue one is ours. I was as surprised as anyone with the price they put on it and personally thought it would be worth somewhere in the 60ish range. We bought ours from a client in April 2006 and paid $15,000 CDN which included the vehicle safety inspection.

I have been restoring a 280 for nearly three years and during that time have followed UK prices quite closely.I have seen low mileage RHD original mint cars or fully restored cars on offer for between 35,000 and 50,000 pounds.
When I was recently choosing what colour to paint my car I visited a well known dealer/restorer in southen England to see their stock.
The showroom had blue, red, white, tunis beige(my cars original colour) cars on display. When I spoke to the owner about colours he said the only colour he could sell at the moment was silver.
He then showed me cars that were being restored to order. Two were finished and one was nearly finished. All were silver with red leather. The finishes were modern with bright silver paint and matt leather like you might find on a modern German sports car. They did look very nice with a lovely standard of finish. He had a waiting list and the price.......... 50,000 pounds(100,000 US dollars)
As much as I like Tunis beige it does look a lot better under Californian Sunshine then it does in the UK rain.My car is now silver!

DB280,
How about posting some photos of your restoration?
Which southern dealer did you visit? Since they were restoring cars I am assuming it wasn't the chap just S of the river near Putney at the big roundabout whose name I can't remember nor that of his garage. (But the cars were all fur coat and no knickers; wouldn't touch any of them with a barge pole).

James, the dealer who has a 'Pagoda Passion' is based in Hampshire.I can't really comment on the quality of the the work but the finished result was very nice.I know the cars are totally stripped to the shell.I dont think the cars are updated apart from the style of finish but I suppose they will change spec if the new owner requires it.One car had later 15" sl alloys(Flat faced and looked out of place) and vented discs for example.
As for my own car,its 85% finished.Just waiting for the bumpers to return from the chromers and then the outside is finished.I will post some pictures then.

Remember these German prices are in Euro, so for US bucks multiply by 1.35.
As I recall in Essen last April, Mercedes sold a restored Pagoda for either EUR 140,000 or even more, can't remember now. So that would be about $180,000.
