Title: Best adhesive for door sill mat replacement
Post by: bmitchell on August 08, 2007, 13:52:45
Hi-

Im replacing the inner and outer door sill chrome / aluminum and the 4 inch grey / black mat on both the drv and passenger sides of my 280sl.

Suggestions on what adhesive to use to adhere the new mat material.

and as a bonus question what adhesive are folks using for the water seal gasket around the trunk.

thx

When I replaced my threshold mat I just used regular old contact cement available at Home Depot.  I put on two coats and its held well.

When I reinstalled my trunk seal (and all other seals) I just used a 3m weatherstrip adhesive available at any auto parts store.

Make sure to buy one that holds up at high temperatures - a car sitting in the sun can get really hot!  I like DAP/Westwood "Gel formula" since it doesn't drip, and you can adjust the pieces for about 30 minutes.

This may sound unorthodox, but I did not glue mine down.  I cut my own mat to fit snuggly between the chrome rails so it doesn't slide or bunch.  I "open and inspect" underneath the mat every now and again to make sure nothing bad is happening under there.  At least this way I know that no stray moisture is building up and doing nasty things to my door sill.

thanks guys-

the contact cement was my initail gut feel - will take the heat issue into consideration in product selection
