I noticed the shifter linkage had quite a bit of vertical "slop" to the point where I could press down on the shifter and make contact
with the drive shaft ...
Underneath the car, I saw the remainder of a black soft rubber bushing
about 70% intact.
Is there an exploded diagram that would show how to replace this bushing, or has anyone done a replacement and can share some direction
Thanks, as always.

Hi Bruce,
If you go to the technical articles in this forum under transmission & clutch you will find the info to replace the bushings & boot. If you are talking to Cheryl at K & K Mfg. (www.kkmfg.com) she will know all the parts you need. K & K also has an exploded view of the shifter area on their website. While you are doing that repair, you might as well replace the bushings at the other end of the linkage closer to the firewall. You will see the access cover plate once you have the carpet lifted. I have attached some pic's for reference. Hope this helps...

Bruce,
I just did this job 2 weeks ago, it goes pretty smoothly. As you disassemble it, pay attention to the way the shift arm ball fits into the socket, ie the position of the bushings, wave washer and snap ring relative to the shift rod ball. As they say, assembly is the reverse of disassembly. It's easier to work on the plate and shift rod if it's out of the car. I removed them as one piece. 2 nuts on the shifter plate and one bolt at the bottom of the shift arm gets them out. Once disassembled, it helps to have a pick or an awl to make sure you get all of the remnants of the previous bushings out of the socket. Then switch to a wire brush to make a clean job of it. If you also replace the 2 bolt bushings on the shifter plate it helps to use a vise to get them in. The shift rod ball bushings should just press right in. Don't forget to lube the ball before attaching the top bushing. You'll love the way the linkage feels after you're done.
