Title: Los Angeles Convertible Top Repair
Post by: pch90265 on July 01, 2007, 13:49:05
I am having some problems with the soft top on my '71 280sl, namely the back portion will not lock into place and it is curling at the edges of the cloth.

Could someone recommend me a reputable shop in the Los Angeles area that specializes in repairing these types of tops.

Thanks,
Bert

The latching mechanism is attached by cable to the lever in the inside of the car on the LHside rear.
Maybe the mechanism needs oiling? Does it move when you move the lever? If yes it could be out of adjustment.

The curling soft top has been discussed on here.
I suggest you use Search look for something like 'soft top'.

Tom Collitt is also an excellent resource. He runs an independent service shop down there. Run a search on his name here & you'll definitely find him.

I followed Matt's advice and took my car to GAHH in North Hollywood. Apparently, there were a lot of problems with the top other than the soft top curling at the edges; including missing springs and "absence" of various parts for the locking mechanism.  I just got the car back yesterday and the top looks as good and sound as any modern convertible.  Jack at GAHH was very knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend this shop for your soft-top needs whether you are local or not.
