Hello Erick,
What's the history on this? Is it a new noise?

I think this noise was there since I purchased the car.

Hello Erick,
Over-tightening the slotted spanner nut on the differential flange (at the driveshft) will cause the pinion bearings to make noise. Do you know if anyone has ever tampered with this? Any bearings can be changed, but if the problem is a worn ring or pinion gear, then your better off replacing the diff with a complete good used diff. Any major parts will be much more expensive than a good used diff. There are plenty of good used ones around.

no one has tampered with it since I purchased the car 4 years ago.would it be cheap and easy to replace the rear bearing and see what it does?
thanks

Hello
Erick,
There are a total of six bearings in the differential assembly. The axle bearings are the least difficult to change.

just discovered I have a rear right bearing that is bad can this cause the noise? . it does not get worst when i turn

Erick, is it a really, really high pitch that seems to come from right rear wheel? Does it happen at medium/high speeds? How about the moment you touch the brakes?

not to high . the noise stops when I hit the clutch pedal

Darn. I was hoping we had the same problem that you could figure out then I could follow along! Yours seems more gear/axle related -- mine maybe wheel bearings or brakes?... Not sure at all of this.

Erick,

Why is the clutch release bearing not a suspect?
Is the whine present when the car is stationary?
It's quite amazing how noise travels along a drive line...

You say you've changed your diff fluid, but have you changed your transmission fluid? When I bought my '66 111 coupe, I noticed a medium-frequency whine, which used to disappear/diminish whenever I pressed the clutch. Once I changed the transmission fluid, this whine was gone.
Of course, now I can hear all sorts of other sounds... but they can wait.

can the rear pinion bearings be changed without removing the axle?

Hello Erick,
Normally only the axle bearings are replaced with the diff. still in the car. replacement of other bearings may involve more dis-assembly and complicated setting of the ring and pinion gears.
If your noise goes away when you put in the clutch your problem is most likely not rear end related.

the noise is less when the clutch is on but more on aceleration or deceleration , for sure from the diff . want to try my luck on the rear pignion bearing . can it be changed with the diff in place?
thanks
