so, 66 230 sl, purchased a new voltage reg from K&K MFG
bosch pn 0 192 062 007
MB part 002-154-74-06
started the car, the red light came on, drove the car red light still on, hmm, the volt meter said 11.9 volts.
put old volt reg back on car = no red light. and volt meter went up to 12.7 volts.
thoughts?
the alt has been on the car for quite some time.

If the fan belt is loose the alternator will not put out enough volts under load.

Bob,
I agree, however the belt is quite tight, very little deflection.
when I put the old volt reg on the light went off. no other change?

Sounds like that new voltage regulator is defective, no?

problem solved,
using the fantastic color coded wiring diagram that I received in the pagoda world I found that I had wired the plug that goes into the alt backwards.
I had the DF and D+ wires reversed.
corrected the wiring and alt light went out and the volt meter seemed to hold the voltaage stable.
