What years/models, etc were 127.982 engines used in?

Hello Glenn,
The 127.982 was used in the W111 220SE finback sedan from 1959 through 1965. they made over 66,000 of these sedans.
The other similar M127 engine was the M127.984 used in the W111 coupes and convertibles, but not very many of these (around 2,000).
Although the M127.981 of the 230SL is very similar in most aspects there are some major differences like (Cylinder bore diameter, cylinder head, injection pump, injectors, intake, valve cover, etc.) The most obvious difference is the two cylinder injection pump used in the 127.982 sedan engines. The block assembly and its major parts are the same as the SL except the sedans have the slightly smaller bore size as standard and no tachometer drive!

Joe, Ah, the mystery of it all. My latest 230SL(012573) has a 127.982 engine, a -R11 6 plunger injection pump, a mechanical tach blocked out,- don't know what else so far. Was the 127.982 used only with 2 plunger FI pumps? The -R11 IP has a 4 bolt(not 6) cover plate on the access area(below the name plate).

The 230SL head and injector pumps will bolt right up along with the manifolds making it look identical to the 230SL engine. As you have noticed the blocked tack drive is give-away along with the engine number. Good detective work. The head gaskets are even the same.
As far as I know the six plunger injection pump was only used on the 230SL engines.

Hey Joe and anybody else, Question 1, Did those 220SEb four door fin tails with 127.982 type III engines, have 2 plunger FI pumps or 6? Q 2, This '65 230SL(with the 127 engine)- can I put a 280SE engine in it to mate up to a 'GA 230 SL-E' auto tranny? So far the only redeeming feature of this car is its 3 air horn Italian Stebel system. Many Thanx

Here's a 220 SEb coupe engine with a 2 plunger inj pump. If I'm not mistaken, it had a tacho as well.

The head gasket design must have been changed since I tried this in the 80's. I tried using the 129 part number headgasket for a 230sl, between a 6 port injected SL head and a 220SE/b block. It filled the crankcase with coolant.
I ended up having to use the 220SE/b gasket with a 127 part number before it would work.

Hello Al,
I believe you are correct here. My parts books show a different head gasket for the 220SEb and the 230SL engine. However these days the 230SL gasket and the 250SL gaskets are the same. I will have to research this a bit. If someone has the six injector head and injection pump on a W127.982 (sedan engine), then the head from a 230SL had to be used with one gasket or the other.

Yes the five passenger coupes and cabriolets had the "SL like" dash guages with the mechanical tack and tack drive on the engine.
Hello Glenn,
The transmissions are compatable, however you may need to swap the converter. The early cars had flywheels with four bolt hook-up to the converter and the later cars had a six bot hook up at the converter. The flywheels are not interchangeable between the two but the torque converters are.
