A friend of mine has a 1970-280SL that is in need of a tune up and I looked at the distributor to see which one it was in order to get the correct points and condenser. I could not read all the numbers but the last 3 were 061. The distributor is aluminum and the rotor in the distributor is 1234 332 107. It does have the electronic ignition.
I know the 051 was an original steel distributor and the 009 was a replacement but I am not familiar with the 061. She went to the local MBZ dealer and the rotor he gave her did not fit this distributor.
Does anyone have some specific info on what I may need for this tune up? :?:

Hello dwsfa,
I cross this distributor number to a 1970 280-SE sedan engine. You may have a sedan distributor or a sedan engine in the car. This distributor should work fine, the advance curve may not be quite as radical as a SL distributor, but is function is the same. This distributor uses the Bosch points #1 237 013 082, Bosch condenser #1 237 330 178, Bosch rotor # 1 234 332 109, Bosch cap #1 235 522 051, Bosch coil #0 221 118 005. A dealer may not be able to cross these numbers. Try to order parts for a 1970 280-SE sedan or find an authorized Bosch ditributor and use the above Bosch numbers.

Thanks Joe,
I guess I will go back and check the engine number and look at the head to see if there is any indication that this motor is from a SE as opposed to an SL. When she purchased the car 10+ years ago she had been told that the engine had been rebuilt. It looks like they may have substituted a SE engine and not actually rebuilt the SL engine.
I will suggest to her that she request a copy of the original datacard to find the original # for this car. It is a very solid car as far as body condition(ie no rust) and had spent at least the last 18 years in SF. It may have been in CA for more years than that but I have only known the owner for that period of time.
Thanks to this group(Yahoo group) I know my 68-250 has the original motor as the numbers match those on the datacard. I would not be surprised to learn that the motor in her car is not original.
My curiosity has been arroused and I will do some detective work.
Joe, you are a great resource and I for one (and I know many others agree)you are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks Dan,
The actual cylinder head numbers are the same on both the SL's and sedans, the heads are identical. There is different early and late heads, on both sedans and SL's.
There is still the chance that only the distributer was changed on your friends car.

Hmm that brings back a memory.
Isn't the '009' distributor a 'mechanical advance only' that the Volkswagon guys like to use on Type 1's (and 2's and 3's, I guess)?

Hi Robert,
JFUR6 0231 185 009 replaces 0231 116 051, and it works with vacuum retard.
0231 185 007 replaces 0231 116 046 (and 050), and it works with vac. advance.
Hope it helps on your question.
Are you sure all the rest of the numbers match with that "009 VW distributor"? Because I guess those VW Type 1's, 2's, 3's were not 6 cylinders...

Snicker... busted:-)
Yeah. Monday morning coffee hadn't kicked in.
But I do remember that Bosch number associated with VW engines. I'll have to dig out my old books. Haven't worked on one in 15yrs, or so.
