Did the early 230SL have the oil lubrication reservoir(90 SAE gear oil) on the water pump?(like the 50s).
-
Yes, Glen.
The filler plug is on top and the level plug at 3 O'Clock.

So is this yet another periodic maintenance task?

Yes, if you still have this old style pump with the filler/level plugs. Could have been replaced with later type 'sealed for life' bearings.

So if we do have one of the early water pumps, what is the recommended procedure for lubing these guys? And, I bet like many here, mine has been replaced over the years. Is it likely that a replacement is the "original" type or would it have been replaced by a "sealed for life" version? My replacement: 115 200 1220

As with all things Mercedes the answer is not quite clear on when the change to the different pump was made. Here is the listing of changes I gleaned from the information in the "Mercedes Collector" by Frank Mallory
Chassis 375 - From motor 371 for -0- and motor 005 for -2- water pump changed.
Chassis 5981 From engine -0- 5366 change water pump housing (lower radiator hose changed)
Chassis 6050-14106 From engine -2- 987, modified water pump housing; lowere radiator hose changed.
Chassis 6731 From engine -0- 5987, the water pump received a Kaco packing
Chassis 6736 From engine -2-1157, the water pump received a Kaco packing
Chassis 13640 From engines -0-11122 and -2-3177 the following engine parts were changed 1. crankcase, 2. top dead center timing pointer, 3. ignition cableset, 4. water pump.
Hopefully this give a couple of touch points to narrow down the lubrication change.
I believe the -0- and -2- engine designations refer to manual and automatic transmissions respectively.

I believe this is the later pump, but you can check to see if it has the 2 plugs or not ( another excuse to go into the garage....).

Naj, I believe you are correct (again!). I don't see any plugs on my pump...
So to tie this to Glenn's question -- good to check and see which style one has. I feel better now.

My sept/oct '64(-006576) has a sealed unit-looks original.
