Title: SLS lock set matched

SLS (germ) sells a complete lock set for 280SL that seems to include the door handles, fuel cap, trunk lid and ignition all keyed to the same.  The site is German so I am not sure if this is indeed the case.  Has anyone used this?  Is there any reason to not try this for the 230SL?  Meaning the ignition not being swapable, or some other thing I am just not thinking of?

It would be nice to have one key for the car, instead of three (sometimes four).  Although I realize this is not exactly original specs for a 230SL.

There is an English flag to click for a translation. I believe it is only the barrels that change please. I may be wrong and I am not being rude by the way.

Just looked at the SLS site. There is an English language button both on the home page (top left corner) and then again on each page (top right corner). However, not everything is actually available in English, including the lock/key information.

The set they sell seems to contain all items containing a lock completely: gas gap, door handles, trunk lock, even glove compartment lock and costs almost EUR 600, i.e. about $780. This is for the 280 SL as from 9/69. According to the information provided, it is possible to convert older models to the one-key system, starting with the 250 SL chassis number 2980, however then some parts of the steering column will have to be modified, up until the 280 SL 9/69 mark.

Maybe it is best to send them an email with your vehicle data and a description of what you are looking to achieve.

Hello, Chad,

I do have one such set in my vault  :|

The ignition lock on the 230/early 250 is completely different (Niemann as opposed to Hu????) and therefore not interchangeable.
The door handles have a different operating jaw but these could probably be swapped over.
I believe the glove box lock and trunk lock would change over and the fuel cap would fit too.
You could end up with 2 keys instead of your present 4?

Hummmm. I will formulate an email including VIN to SLS to see what the packages can do for my VIN.  It would be nice to get down to an ignition key plus one other.

Thinking - not experienced with lock changes, perhaps a locksmith can adjust/swap tumblers to make the glovebox, doors, gascap, boot use one common key - is this a dream?

Fantastic... I will visit my local locksmith this week.  Two keys (ignition and all else) I can live with.  Three keys has always seemed absurd.

Hi, Erick,

When I bought my 230, it had a later gas cap (280-style double-cut key).  I eventually found a 230 tumbler that matches my doors (as original), so I swapped it into my gas cap.  I believe that I have the old (newer) gas cap tumbler and key in my garage.  Wanna' swap for an old Vespa?  Just kidding.  Send me an email, and I'll send you the tumbler.

I fitted the one key system from SLS to my 1968 280 SL. Works beautifully.

Had a key problem with the passenger door.  PO must have replaced the handle/set but not rekeyed the lock.  I took it apart and was able reorder the key plate pieces and use all but one of them.  I just left it out.  The lock is not as secure because it has 9 of 10 plates that line up with the key to lock/unlock.  

It was a simple job not unlike doing a lockset for your home door.  Wish I had taken pics.
