Title: BBB on CD on Ebay
Post by: aomastu on January 26, 2007, 17:53:38
Here is a BBB on CD on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-Service-Manual-2CD-W113-W198-W121_W0QQitemZ170073356600QQihZ007QQcategoryZ34227QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is the CD just as good as the book?  Or, better?

The liturature section doesn't mention the CD collection of the BBB.

Any opinion of this?

This should be a very good source of all of the official information. Reading on screen is not much fun, but you can print chapters or books that you want to have in print. If you don't already have (much) of this material, maybe this is the thing for you.

Careful!

Check with your dealer and/or the Classic Center.  I believe the BBB on CD for our cars is $25 or less!  Like Cees said, you can print out any of the pages...  What ever you select, the CD brings up the information as an Adobe file, which you can simply print out, take to your garage as you work on your car, then throw away due to oil & grease that you smeared on the pages as you work on your 113.

Bob,

Thanks for taking the trouble to put in the screen shots (I can never remember which series of buttons to press).

Does "the $25 cd" have a ISBN or part number of its own so that I order the correct one from MB? If not, would you mind just posting the full cd title?

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

:( Unfortunately, the CD does not contain the part numbers.  It has a catalog number that you are supposed to refer to when ordering parts.  See attached pics for what the CD requests that you do.
I never tried to mention the catalog number to the dealer...  not sure if they even go by this anymore?

Overall, it's actually a pretty good CD reference tool to use.  Like Joe mentioned in an earlier post, it just takes some digging through the manuals and CD to find the information.  It's not always in an obvious spot.

Reviving an old thread here....

I just bought the CD version of the BBB and find that it doesn't work properly on a Mac.  I get through all the welcome flash junk, can select a car model (230SL in my case), but when I click on the workshop manual nothing happens.  I get the same results using FireFox and Safari.  If I do it under Windows running an old version of IE (probably IE 5), it works fine.

Is anyone using these CDs on a Mac?

Interestingly, if I switch the CD 1 (the W113s are all on CD 2) and select a 300 Gullwing, I can click through to the workshop manual with no trouble.

I was told by the Classic Center that the CDs will work on a Mac.
Is yours a new CD from Mercedes?
Or, something other than that?

It's a new CD from MercedesManuals.com.  It's called the "1956-1972 Mercedes-Benz Star Classic Service Manual Vol 4" and is a 2 CD set.  It has the same splash screens that bpossel posted earlier in this thread, so I believe it to be the real thing content-wise, but it's possible that it's 5-guys and a printing press reproducing them.

That said, it works fine if I run it under Windows XP, but still using FireFox.  This leads me to conclude that the media is fine and the files are being read without issue, but that there is a software problem somewhere, most likely in the ShockWave code on the CD.  My first suspicion would be that it's making some compatibility check that was a good idea 10 years ago, but it causing a problem now.

Interestingly, the workshop manuals for the 190 and 300 which are on Disk 1 work fine on the Mac.

I seem to be a magnet for problems like this.

I'd be real interested to connect with anyone using these CDs on a Mac so we can compare notes.

Thanks

Try opening the disk in Finder (click on the disk item) and navigate through the folders in Finder to see if they ultimately contain pdf's which can then be shown in Preview.

Yes, I can find the PDFs and view them - that's the good part.  It's the indexing and table of contents capabilities that are broken.  Worst case I'll make my own table of contents and change the PDF file names to be self-describing (or at least more so than now).  Some of the files are named by the original BBB section numbers, and for those who know that section 68 is the steering system (made up example) it's not so bad, but I don't have that committed to memory which means I have to randomly open files until I find what I need.  There are about 100 PDFs for each BBB, and there are at least 4 BBBs on the CDs.  In some cases the file names have no correlation to BBB section numbers, and in some cases they do. The result is that opening files is a serious exercise in viewing the world through a straw.

I suppose the bright side is that I don't have to cut up my BBB and scan it myself.  It's just frustrating to me when simple stuff like this doesn't work like it's supposed to.

I copied the CDs to my hard drive to start debugging them, and discovered they work fine from my hard drive.  Go figure.
