Gentlemen:
I was reading on leaks and I encountered these questions:
1. Where is the axle vent filter located? can you please describe or photo or illustrate it. I have a leak in the axle.
2. Also, where is that fuel injection pump filter, that has a paper element?
Thank you for your expertise.

The vent is part no 55. Under the cap which is crimped in place there is a small filter.

The fuel injection pump does not have a built in filter. The list of fuel filters is:
1. Plastic screen in fuel tank.
2. Metal screen in electric fuel pump (not on all models).
3. Main paper fuel filter in engine bay.
The paper filter is in an aluminium(?) housing that is verticle on 230SL and angled on 280SL. For a picture, go here:

Click on the second picture, second row down, "07.a Einspritzanlage". The fuel filter is part #50 in this picture, it sits in the housing shown below it and it's all held together with bolt #52.
Here's some good fuel system threads:

Hey Dan,
If you are after the paper AIR filter on the Injection Pump look at picture number 3 second line, same web site.
It is #50.
This filter is on the cold start system and if blocked can cause problems. It is easy to remove (thin 22mm spanner) and clean out by just blowing through it.

The paper fuel filter element is in the filter bowl just below the power steering resevoir and to the left if the ign. coil (see picture)
The bowl can be released by loosening the bolt at the top center of the filter head.

thanks to all. Now, I'll just have to read all these leads. I'm so glad I found this forum. Till then and until next time.

And after you have removed the filter, look inside: You should see a pleated paper element undamaged! Mine was so badly torn that it wouldn't provide any filtering.
The filter for the rear axle is located about at the top of it. It's a small cylinder about 3/4 dia and 1 1/2 long. It's more of a breather cap, although it has a small felt in the top. Rear axle is often wet from oil that seeps down from that cap. I also had a leak via the thread of the drain plug. I stopped that with some black sealant. Don't overtighten!
