I have found a supplier of what appears to be a very neat little device to add wash/wipe and intermittent wipe to old cars using the existing switches. See www.smart-screen.co.uk
Apparently the Mini and MG boys use them a lot but I wondered if anyone had fitted the device before. The guy at Smart Screen seemed to think it would fit and he only needed to know if our cars had dynamic park and if the washer switch worked on the +’ve or –‘ve wire.
He referred to dynamic park as being a dead short across the motor when switched off, which was double dutch to me, but as the wipers park themselves I assume the answer to that is yes. However, does anyone know if the screen washer is switched by the +,ve or -,ve wire. The system costs less than £50 and I thought it must be worth a try.
Any thoughts and comments gratefully received..

Now I have returned home and found the excellent wiring diagram included with Pagoda World I can se that the washers are switched on the +’ve side.
In reading an article on fitting the system I see it is necessary to identify the park wire and wonder if anyone knows which one this is.
From the wiring diagram I can see three wires from the switch as follows:
Switch terminal 29d black/violet/yellow to relay terminal 86 (on/off)
Switch terminal 29e black/violet/blue to relay terminal 56 (speed)
There is also a third wire from 29f noted as plug connection which goes to terminal 3 on the wiper motor and is black/violet/white. Does anyone know if this is the park wire?
Hope someone can help.

I am definitely not an electrical whizz but my guess would be the 29f wire.
Maybe Achim, who did the wiring diagrams, or Bob Smith from Australia, can weigh in here.
Glad you appreciated the wiring diagrams!

I don't think that the 113 has an external parking lead for you to tap into.
The sedans did because the bug squirtz also triggered the wipers to run, The pagodas only run the pump motor and are not tied into the wipers.
And yes they do have a dynamic park that grounds out both poles of the armature to stall the motor.

Thanks Cees & Al. The guy at Smart Screen has now worked out the wiring for our cars so I’ve ordered one and will let you know how I get on.

very keen to learn how you get on with this.....

While we're at the 'combo' switch- Do the early 230s have the 'flasher' switch for the high beams on the combo stick? Wire from 29b to the down side of fuse 10 per the wiring diagram. On American models was this wire folded back(unconnected) at the fuse panel?
-
Yes Glennard. Mine does.
PS I guess I should mention mine is a Euro...

Yes. I attached the wire just as you have discribed and now the "flash to pass" works on my 66 usa model.

Success, I now have intermittent wipers variable between 3 and 30 seconds and every time I use the screen washers the wipers wipe three times, all with the existing set up and no extra switches. Whilst I have yet to venture out in the rain, all works well and I consider it £50 very well spent.
It took a while to sort out the wiring connections due to the fact that the wiper stalk switch is momentary so the unit ended up being wired directly to the wiper motor.
This upgrade is simple and highly recommended.

No extra switches? How do you control the intermittent period? Also, would this be any different on a 230SL?

Hi Rodd,
I’m not great with electrics but the unit has some sort of memory and switching the wipers on and off once puts it into memory mode and you just switch them on and off again between 3 and 30 seconds later and the unit takes over and will continue wiping intermittently at the set delay period for as long as you want. To return to normal wipers you either turn the wipers on for more than 5 seconds or turn them on and off again to put the unit back into memory mode and leave them off for more than 30 seconds. Activating the washers then also sends 3 pre programmed wipe commands and either returns to the pre programmed intermittent wipe or just turns the wipers off. It’s all very neat and easy to fit and operate.
Fitting was straight forward I just ran two jumper wires, one from terminal 1 at the motor and one from connection 1 at the stalk connector under the dash and then connected a positive and negative to the unit which hides up under the footwell cover.
I managed to fit and work it and electrics are definitely not my best subject.
More information is available at www.smart-screen.co.uk where I purchased the unit.

David,
Looks great! I may get one. I seldom use the SL in the rain, but it might be nice when I get caught once in a while.

Rodd,
before you get caught again ;)
here is your chance to buy one on eBay: Interval wiper (http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300091449750&rd=1&rd=1")
This gadget was discussed on the German Pagoda forum {for those who read German go to: Pagodentreff.de/diskussionsforum/t3694 (http://"http://www.pagodentreff.de/diskussionsforum/t3694-einfache-billige-nachruestung-wischerintervallschaltung-wisch-wasch-automatik.html?highlight=wisch+wasch") for pictures and text} and if I understood the electrical lingo correctly it involves installing a VW relay #191 955 529 (= Hella #004876-00) that can be found in many old Passats and Golfs together with an "in-between-coupling" plug sold by DaimlerChrysler.
It works by activating the wiper briefly (<1 sec) as if to activate the washer pump. The wipers then wipe every 6 seconds. Another quick push on the stick stops the intervall wiping. Push/pulling the stick for longer than 3 seconds activates the pump but now together with the wipers. Apparently the gadget works for all Pagoda types.

Having spent an hour driving in mizzle yesterday, I thought I might plump for one of these units. Are we +ve or -ve earth?!
Or if David is around... which unit did you get?
Thx

James,
-ve earth

Thank you Naj! Much appreciated

I think it should be possible to make all the connections on the relays and motors under the bonnet, hence negating the need to play inaccessible under dash games.

I like the idea and it would be nice to do it in the engine bay. The thought of getting into the rear of the dash board immediately made me not want to do it. ;)

sells it as a plug and play unit for our cars......

Thats a good solution. I bought it about 5 years ago and it works fine. You don`t recognice it, because the electronic is in the old housing of the wiper relay
