My 280sl needs to have the mechanical fuel injection rebuilt. My usual mechanic is somewhat high in his repair estimate (my opinion only) In the past i have always been told that a good diesel mechanic should be able to work on it. Is this correct or just an old wives tale? Your help and advice will be much appreciated.
thanks

blue pagoda,
not sure about the old wives tale, most injection pumps are sent out for repair to an anthorized repair center.
I would find out who the authorized bosch repair center is closest to you is and contact them. If you have a local mb dealer the parts or service folks should be able to direct you,
Most estimates for the sl injection pump rebuild run from $1,000 to $1,300 us. some quotes may be higher

Hey Blue
A company in Melbourne, Morrassy and Williams, (03) 9397-3993, rebuild the injection pumps
It would be worth a call to them.
I remember chatting to someone there a couple of years ago about a rebuild and the price didn't seem too high.

Why? Many times it is believed that the injection pump needs rebuilt when actually the problem lies elsewhere. From what I have read, mechanics tend to blame problems on the pump because they don't take the time to perform proper troubleshooting, or they don't understand how the systems work together.

Anyone working on diesel injection pumps won't understand how to fix the gasoline type pumps. Although they make look the same, they aren't even close. Only someone who knows gasoline mechanical injction pumps should be considered.
