I had to remove my fuel lines to check my injector pump timing and when re installing I discovered something I did not notice when removing.
there is a bracket that holds the fuel lines together on the front of the motor. when re installing the bolt that holds the bracket I was having problems so I move the whole thing and pulled on the bolt I was screwing in.
the bolt was connected to a 3 inch metal rod that fits into the block? once end was threaded so I could secure the fuel line bracket
but it seemed to just sit in the block.
nothing secured it. is this correct?
thanks

Caution! Caution!,,
Matt, this sounds like the hinge pin for the timing chain tensioner arm. Do NOT try to start the engine if this is the case. Take your valve cover off and make sure the tensioner arm is intact.
If this is the case, someone has used the wrong bolt to hold the bracket. Normally a very short 19mm bolt threads into the block and not the threaded pin.

joe,
great, thanks.
I will pull the cover off tomorrow to check.
just for fun I pulled out the haynes manual, it shows the hose bracket bolted to the front of the motor in the same manner.
confusing

Hello Matt,
The tensioner arm pin is about three inches long and 10mm diameter. It is machined smooth on the outside. It has a smaller threaded hole bored into one end of it. It slides into the front of the cylinder head and is the pivot for the chain tensioner arm. A short 19mm bolt threads into the head and keeps the pin in place. It sounds like the 19mm bolt is missing on your engine, in which case the pin can slide out the pront of the head. In addition it sounds like someone has used the threaded hole in the pin to hold the fuel line bracket in place.
If you have removed the pin, you may have allowed the tensioner arm to fall out of place, in which case the timing chain can jump or jamb.
See if this photo makes sense to you Matt.

joe,
yep that looks right, hmmm where is my 19 mm bolt?
sob, I will pull the head and verify the tensioner is still in place, I am optimistic it is, since the bolt did not have any friction when I pulled it out or removed it.
where can I get a 19 mm bolt?

Hello Matt,
I think you mean pull the valve cover not the head? Be carefull on that 19mm bolt if it is too long it will bottom out on the pin and can crack the head!
I believe the actual part number is 007603 012100. The bolt head is 19mm and the diameter is 12mm (M 12x1, 5x18 din 961). If that 19mm bolt was missing from your engine you may have had an oil leak also.

joe,
yes, sorry, need to pull the valve cover.
when I pulled the fuel lines I do not remember a 19mm bolt.
the only bolt I remember is the m6 thread bolt that went thru the fuel line bracket then into the pin.
is the 19mm bolt hollow so the bolt that holds the bracket to the pin can screw into the pin???
thanks
Matt

pulled the valve cover and yep you were correct.
I must be lucky as the chain tensioner and spring were in place.
I was able to pull on the pin and see the end of the pin in the spring. When pushing in the pin It did not go in much further once it got past the spring. maybe 2 mm. is this acceptable?
If not, do I need to remove the tensioning device to allow more play so I can wiggle the pin in?
I am still confused on the 19 mm bolt. I do not think there was one on my car and yes there is a lot of oil on the front of my motor.
The only bolt I have is the one that goes into the pin and that is a 6m thread x 19 mm length. I think I used a 10 mm socket to get it off.
would you by chance have a photo of this bolt? I wonder if I can order it from K&K mfg

Hello Matt,
Good, I was afraid the arm might have fallen down into the engine. The pin does not need to be in too far. Here is a picture of the bolt.

Joe,
thanks for the photo, so I think I am missing the bolt and a bracket?
on my 230 sl, all I have is the bracket on the fuel lines with a short 6m thread bolt going into the pivot pin. nothing holding the pin in.
I did take a look as some photos on line of sl motors, and I noticed that some sl's (280 I think) had a large bracket bolted to the front of the motor then the fuel lines?
It is humorous that the only thing holding in the pivot pin was the small bolt from the fuel line bracket

Matt,
I think the only purpose for the threaded end on the pin is to allow you to remove it (you just thread a bolt into the pin and pull). It was a prior owner's mistake to use the threads to secure anything at all.

so, called metric motors to get their input. they told me to go buy an m12 x1.5 thread bolt, cut to length and put the bolt thru the fuel line bracket and into the block. If needed add washers.
funny thing, when I called them they said I probably have a lot of oil on the front of the motor. this was the second time I heard that in this post.
off to pep boys to get a bolt and get this car on the road!!

Hello Matt,
The bolt is a 12 X 1.0 I believe. If your not having any luck, just send me your address and I will mail you one. ja17@worldnet.att.net

Metric Motors sold me a new bolt, took a few times to install since there was a lot of gunk in the threads,
now to clean all the oil and grime off of the front of the motor
