My '68 280 SL has some ugly, non-standard rear bumper guards. I've searched this site, checked all the suppliers I know of, tried eBay several times and these guards are expensive. Best I've found is $175 each for a reproduction. Does any one have any bumber guards for sale or know of a supplier with a reasonable cost? (No, I don't want to remove them and rechrome the bumpers.) Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a pic of your non-standard guards? There were a correct, but very different type for the earliest cars.

I'm not a fan of bumper guards but I guess compared to those the correct 113 bumper guards look really nice.
They look like they're made for bigger sedans probably the 108/109 or maybe even the 600s.
By the way, do the bumper guards attach on the top and bottom only?
I've thought about removing them on mine but thought it'll expose a hole right in the middle of the bumpers.

Ask Cees Klumper about the plugs he used for his bumpers after removing the guards. (A search should find the thread.)

I looked thru the old thread regarding removing bumper guards. It's interesting to read what the others thought or did with theirs. I've gotten used to them and agree that this is what the US spec car looked like. Actually I grew up driving a Heckflosse that had these bumper guards too so it's nostalgic in a way though not my preference.
I noticed that the picture from Hauser looked like the ones that Rod has. Could these have been the original ones for the early 230SLs then?

Vincesy, my car is a Euro spec car originally sold in Germany and it does not have bumper guards. The larger guards were of the early type found on most 230sl's.

By the way, I was referring to a picture you had posted on an older thread. I didn't think it was your car as you were just illustrating what the early guards looked like.

Our member and friend Roman Bartl had these peculiar, gigantic (much larger then the US-spec later versions) bumper guards on his 1966 230SL. He removed them, and I suggested he go to a hardware store and get a chrome cap-hole plug. Snapped right in, no welding, no trouble, just a nice little finish item. Less then $1 each I think. Until his bumpers need a rechrome in 25 years, these work great and look fine too.

Houser... a little off the topic of this thread, but nice pic, & really nice car... but where did you get that nice little pseudo German front license plate with the octagonal orange date & brown / black round registration (TUV) stickers?
Also, a couple of other things... is it the pic angle or are your hubcaps all chrome (not painted body color around the star)?
The other thing is that the car appears to be a silver/tan like DB702.. a later than W113 color. I ask because the color looks a lot like mine (US version '67 250SL), maybe a little bit of a shade darker... but that could be the photo rendition.
