Title: cover for rear shock absorber
Post by: hands_aus on August 03, 2003, 22:41:09
Hello,

I have been wondering if there should be plastic covers on the top of the rear shock absorbers in the boot area.

My car doesn't have them.

Any info greatly appreciated

Bob:
Someone will have to give a date or a VIN number but at some point during production, the rubber covers on the rear shocks were eliminated...

I have never seen these covers on a 280SL. I have seen them on an early 230 SL. I took a quick look at a few lists of Production Changes and could not find a reference to these covers.

Not sure if they should be on your 250 SL. If more info is not posted here, on 17 Aug I expect to see a 250 SL driven by the original owner. I will ask about the covers and let you lnow. Be prerpared for an "I don't remember" reply.

P.S. Took a little detective work to find that you have a 250 SL...might save time if you mention the model in the msg or in your profile  :o)

Hi Bob,

I searched it in my 230 SL Spare Parts Book (Edition C), and I couldn't find any rubber cover for the rear shock absorbers. I haven't spare parts book for 250 or 280, but according to Richard's message, it seems that -in any case- these covers were for early 230 SL, so... :?:

Note: My 230 SL doesn't have them either

Bob, I don't believe there should be any kind of plastic covering inside the "boot" for the rear shocks of a 280 SL.

If you fine the part # to the plastic caps for the rear shocks I would like to buy a set.

I recall asking Tom Hanson at Caliber Motors about the shock covers as well as the covers over the oval resessed area above the mounting point for the subframe mounts.
He convinced me that they were not original on my 1970, but he could get them.

Stan,
Tom's right, the covers in the engine bay would not be original for a 280SL.  As far as the trunk goes, I don't think I've seen any Pagodas with rear shock mount covers.  Disclaimer: I've only seen about 15 different Pagodas in my life and am not an expert.

I have a 1969 280Sl and I was given a set of the rear shock covers several years ago. I like the way they look even if they are not original. Being that this is such a diverse group, I hope I will not be ostracized in the future for expressing MB revisionist sentiments.

My '63 230SL has one shock cover in the boot and looks orginal, the other one is missing when I bought the car. I have searched for years for replacement. Eastwood has a plastic moulding kit that I might use to cast new ones. Any suggestions appreciated!!

If replacements are NLA, maybe we can bunch together as a group and commission an order of new ones from a good manufacturer?

Hi,

I searched it yesterday in my "230 SL, Catalog A" from 1963 (ilustrated spare parts, without part numbers), and there's any plastic cover on top of the rear shock aborbers.
There isn't in the "230 SL Spare Parts List" (Edition C from 1967) either.
BBB and Haynes don´t show these covers for the W113, but they do for the sedans.
I also searched the tests when the Pagodas -from 230 to 280- were launched in vintage magazines from the '60-'70, where all tested cars supposedly were originals (because they were new cars for the media): all pictures of the trunk -vertical or flat spare wheel- show the shock aborbers without plastic covers.

According to those sources, it seems that these plastic covers were not original in the W113. The reason? Maybe MB considered the gap between the top of the shock absorber and the top of the trunk too small there (= no risk of damage to the luggage), or it was a issue of weight  :D , after all, we own an Sport Light(weight) with aluminum hoods and doors, so... why to add extra weight there?  ;)

People who like these covers for their Pagoda, could probably add covers from a W111 or a W108. I guess they would work.

Albert, Joseph and group,

Thanks for your efforts.

That is a definite response. There were NO REAR SHOCK ABSORBER COVERS on the W113.

Now I can devote all my efforts to my electric fuel pump.
