Title: Euro-style License plates?
Post by: harleydan on September 19, 2006, 08:13:50
I have a European spec W113 SL in the USA.  I like the looks of the Euro-style license plates.  Does anyone know where one can get a made-to-order Euro-style plate for the front?  And is it legal to have the "normal/legal" plate in back with the "custom/Euro" plate in front (which more than probably have a different number/letter combination than the front).  I live in Colorado.  Thanks.

Cheers,
Danny

Hi Danny,

1)  There are "2-Plate" states and "1-Plate" states.  I don't know what Colorado is; if you are issued 2 plates most likely you need to have both Colorado plates on your car, front and rear.  You need to check with your Registry/DMV/SOS or whatever they call that in Colorado.

Michigan is a "1-Plate" state, so I have my Michigan PAGODA plate on the rear, and my custom German plate on the front.

2)  You can have a custom-made Euro-plate made at the following place:

http://www.euro-sign.com/european.shtml

I had one made, German, that says "1969 280SL" that answers the questions often asked, "What year is it?" and "What model is it?" There current price is about $36.00.  It is completely, 100% authentic.  So authentic, that if you really were in Germany (or any of the other countries whose plates they make) and you lost your plate, you could probably duplicate it here for less then the penalty they'd charge in Europe!!!

Hope this helps.

Michael and Rodd,

Thanks for the info.  I ordered a German plate from Michael's link.  Michael, did you also order the license plate holder/bracket and did you get it in chrome or black?

Danke,
Danny

Here are a couple more sources for Euro plates.  This one is very informative with various German city codes.  www.shgraphics.com  This last one lets you see what your personalized plate will look like.  www.licenseplates.tv

Dan,

I wanted a very thin chrome frame.  All they had at the time was a large black plastic one.  I searched around and found someone else with a thin chrome frame--but that vendor is lost to memory.  I'm sure if you search around you can find it.  Here's what my plate and frame look like so you can see how nice a job they do on those plates--even the Germans think they are real!

I just received my Euro-style license plate from
www.euro-sign.com and/or www.licenseplates.tv.  The license plate looks great!  I also order two license plate brackets/holders (one black and one chrome) from the same company; however, they were platic and not to the same quality as the license itself.  Does anyone know a source for a good metal Euro-style license plate bracket/holder?

Thanks,
Danny

I found a picture of my car when it was still in Germany before it was brought to USA by its 2nd owner.
I learned that the oval plates were issued by the German government for tourist.  Is this always true?
Does this mean the back plate is also oval?
Do you see any value to duplicating these plates?
