Hello all,
I awould like to install the footwell speakers into my 220SL with the Becker Grand Prix radio. I have the speakers, but not sure where to make the cut to fit the speakers.
Does anyone have a template they can email or mail to me?
Thanks to all.

I believe I have a template. I'd be happy to get you a copy once I get home as I am traveling all week.

Walt:
I've got the panels out of my 280 now to replace. I could make a template and get it right out to you. I'm guessing they are the same on both sides but I'll take a look.

I'm thinking of going to kick panel speakers (presently in the door panels). Were these stock kick panels (cut out)or did they have any special feature?

Walter and Gus,
there is a picture posted by Dick M in this thread showing the cut out for a 4" speaker in a 280SL: http://sl113.com/forums/index.php?topic=2358
and also Joe A. posted some pictures and wiring info in this thread: http://sl113.com/forums/index.php?topic=4669
Unfortunately that cut out is missing in the 230SL.

Hi Walter,
I put 5 1/2" speakers in my kick panels (blaupunkt of course!) On the right side I found a nice large hole in the metal behind the panel that I learned later was for access to the antenna. No such luck on the left side, so I got a large hole saw and cut one in the same position as the other one. Probably not the best way to do it as the blade wants to catch and rip the drill out of your hands. The trick is to go very slow and keep a firm grip on it.

Walter,
Check your e-mail. I sent you something that may help you out with this.

Walter,
I thought I had a diagram for the exact location but I can't seem to find it.
Gernold just put kick panel speakers in my car, you are welcome to check it out in person. I'd be happy to meet you somewhere if you think it would help. I know you live in the DC area -- I'm in Alkexandria.

My situation resembles what Pete has done. I have the larger 5 1/2 inch speakers (which is good because I have a Europa II). On the passenger's side they fit into the existing cavity but on driver's side, a hole has been cut in the metal.
In addition, I have replaced my original kick panels that were pretty shot. I searched for a comparable card stock but the closest thing I found was a small painting canvas (3 dollars each). I recovered them with the MB-Tex I used on the dash. (we "driver" owners can get away with this kinda stuff...)
