Hello folks,
I think I have a wrong part. I ordered a new master cylinder for my 230 sl 66 from k and k. it bolted right up to the brake booster.
ordered new reservoir and "repair" / mounting kit from buds benz.
the reservior looks ok, but the repair kit does not. the o ring for the front connection is too large to fit into the master cylinder hole, but it fits onto the collar of the front reservior tip. the front actually fits ok,
the rear tip has a plug that fits into the rear hole in the master cylinder. the plug is not tight in the hole on the master cylinder, I would think this plug would be rather tight in the hole.

The 3 MB part #s quoted are correct for the 230.

This pulg should expand to a tight fit when you push on the resevoir.
I believe the 'O' ring does go on tne outer collar of the front resevoir and the spring washer and nut should seal it.
Don't remember exact details - I did the job quite a while back :oops:

Hi Matt,
The rubber washers that fit inbetween the master cyl and the reservior need to fit very tightly. What I found worked best was to push the rubber washers onto the reservior plugs first. Then push the reservior into the master cyl. Again, should fit very tightly.

Guys,
so, I double checked the rear fittng, It does not fit snugly in the rear connection. I pushed the reservior into the plug and it did expand some but, not much,
I figured the plug would be very tight in the cylinder then the reservior would be very snug. I will call buds and k and k on tuesday to check.

Guys,
pls find attached a photo of the rear bushing in the master cylinder.
the gap is not much but the bushing is not fitting tight.
does this still seem correct?

well gang, bled the brakes today and did not change any of the parts mentioned in the first e-mail.
sure enough the bushing is not tight and just a little fluid is leaking around it between the bottome of the reservior and the top of the master cylinder where .
what to do?

I NEVER, EVER, rebuild master cylinders!
Shoot me, sue me, call me names, but life and the safety of others is more important than saving a few bucks. I also have to look at liability.
Any wear inside of the cylinder makes this a gamble.

sorry for the confusion, I have a new master cylinder, reservior and a repair kit which contains the o ring, bushing, bolt and spring washer to connect it all together.
the rear bushing is almost a cork sized rubber bushing with a hole in it.
mine does not fit snugly in the master cylinder at the top and does not really fit snugly around the reservior down tube as it passed thru the bushing to the master cylinder.

Well, I think there's two different master cylinders used on 113's. Early is for 230SL and about half of the 250SL's. Everything else uses the type with the small floats in the brake fluid container. These two are so different that I don't think they could be confused.
The early type has a hollow screw that holds the container on to the top of the master cylinder. A small O - ring seals this and a larger grommet seals the back if I can remember this .
I'm not sure why the grommet would be so loose and yet not be deep enough to fit. I wonder if there's two different types of master cylinders. Maybe ATE or Bendix? Possibly a third... Girling
Still, all ( if there is more than one type ) should fit.

your description below is accurate to the kit i received
The early type has a hollow screw that holds the container on to the top of the master cylinder. A small O - ring seals this and a larger grommet seals the back if I can remember this .
that large grommet is the one of concern.
If you scroll down to a few posts below you can see a photo of the grommet and how loose it is. I e-mailed gernold at sl tech, maybe he can help resolve this.

Your picture is not very clear. The grommet may be loose but should fit tightly once the pipe from the canister is fitted. If it doesn't then it's the wrong grommet.

yes, it is not really clear, however ,if you look at the photo again, I am holding the larget bushing against one side of the hold in the master cylinder, what you see is the gap because the bushing is loose.

Hey Matt,
I bought a kit from Millers for my 250SL as part of my front brake upgrade.
Whilst the work hasn't be done yet, I did a dry run with the grommet in the New Master cylinder (from K&K) and it fits just right.
Both components are made by ATE as per the originals.

All, figured it out after ordering another repair kit from millers, it is the same kit.
the top of the grommot has a large lip and on that lip there is a ridge in the middle of the circumference.
there is a lip on the rear master cylinder connection, you have to push the grommet in the hole until the ridge goes in and hooks on the lip on the master cylinder.
However, each time I pushed the grommet in it would pop out before I could get the reservior in. so I cut a small sliver off of the lower portion of the grommet so I could push the grommet in till the ridge hooked on the lip .
then installed the reservoir and off i go.
