Found this cable under the hood, small red wire. It's zip tied to some other parts, but it's disconnected... anyone recognize it?

Are both ends disconnected? Do both ends have the same type of connector? What was it tied to?

I could be wrong, but It looks like an aftermarket wire like for an alarm or something. What is the other end connected to?

Certainly not original Merc wiring!
Where is the breather pipe from the top of the valve cover going to?

wire looks heavy enough and long enough for fog lights. is it connected to a relay near the other electricals next to brake booster?

That breather pipe from the top of the valve cover (by the oil cap) looks to be routed to the ground. That's how mine was when I bought my car. It's because too much oil blow-by is up under the valve cover and this oily gas & liquid gets pushed back to the venturi unit and intake manifold. People route this pipe to the ground which allows you to better tune the engine air/fuel mixture. That's my take on it.

Neither of the ends are connected.

Rip the wire out. Also, please fix your Closed Crancase Ventilation System if it is indeed disconnected. This is the most rudimentary and basic pollution control a car can have, and should really be correct. These cars pollute enough, even if we only drive them "a little".

What part is the closed crancase ventilation system? I'll get to whatever it may be when the car moves without anyone pushing it. :D

I didn't mean to mislead you Sphe. That's an emission control system that will probably not in the least help you get the car running or running well. After everything is sorted out, it's something that from an environmental point of view you should consider "restoring" if it has been bypassed.

Sphe - It is the 3/4 inch pipe that originates just rear of the oil fill cap on the top of the valve cover. Yours routes back towards the windshield then goes down beside the engine towards the ground. Look at some other engine pics in manuals and on this web site. Over the years there were are about three different types of pipes that connect the valve cover over to the venturi unit. The venturi unit is also called a throttle body by many people. It's between the air filter canister and the intake manifold.

Hello,
Yes that wire is definately an add on. Mercedes wiring is usually sheathed in a black cover. The blue ring terminal on the end of the wire is also non Mercedes. This kind of add-on is usually done by someone adding a radio, fog lights, horns, alarm or some other add-on.

In case of too much oil getting pushed back to the venturi unit and intake manifold, it's better to route that breather pipe into a plastic bottle (as in racing cars) than simply to the ground. At least you will have the condensed oil in the bottle, instead of in the atmosphere.
