I am planning to remove the head on a 280SL engine for rebuilt and would appreciate your expert opinion whether the timing chain must be cut to remove or is there a way to remove and save the chain? I can't find anything in the manuals.
Thanks in advance

Joseph,

is there a way to remove and save the chain?
Once you remove the hydraulic tensionser and chain guide, there is enough slack on the chain to remove the cam drive gear.
Consider replacing the chain if its near 100k miles old :|
Good luck

Hello Joseph,
Look for a masterlink on your chain first. You can always split the chain and add a masterlink if it has none. As NAJ has mentioned it is wise to replace the chain if it has 100,000 miles or more.
