Post by: miltnme on August 23, 2006, 11:11:27
hello friends,
as i am still searching for a lovely PAGODA, saw this one on Ebay Motors, and would like some feedback from you very knowledgable folks. of course i would need a PPI, anyone ever use Roy Spencer or does anyone have a good mechanic in the Burlingame/San Mateo they could recommend for a PPI?

Unfortunately I am still far from knowledgable, but for what it's worth, I spoke with Roy Spencer once about one of his cars and he seemed like a straight shooter.  I've also heard lots of good things about him and his knowledge about the cars.

Here's a question

When were hazard warning lights first installed?

Are you asking about the U.S. spec side marker lamps on the fenders, or four-way emergency flashers?

Jonathan,

Looks like a nice example from the pix, but it's always difficult to say without seeing it, of course. It's identical to my last 280 SL, incidentally.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this car originally had a leather interior, but they replaced the seats with Tex.

My 67 230sl (built in October 66) has the emergency flashers so I believe they were added somewhere late in 1966.

While this looks like a nice example a couple of things raise a flag. If it is still owned by the original owner and is in California, why would they have recently had Bud's Benz, just outside Atlanta do the seats? Sure, it is possible the owner just moved to CA, but it does raise a question.

Secondly the description states that the door panels and pockets are in excellent condition. Look at the attached picture and decide if you consider what you see to be "excellent". Sometimes things like this make you wonder how exaggerated other claims may be.

Not knocking the car, just suggesting a couple of questions you may want to ask the seller.

Thats cool Jonathan but you only get 50 posts on this forum before you have to pull the trigger on a new Pagoda and you are at 32. [:0]

Just kidding. Keep looking, it can take while to find a good one, take your time, keep asking questions and good luck!

They appeared as a running change during 1965, perhaps for the 1966 model run.  My February production (15466) car has them. I could look up the exact chassis number for you but my Mercedes Collectors are in storage for a little while longer while the home remodeling from h-e-double hockey-stick is finishing up!

I wonder why that 280 SL that Terry just posted has those holes in the headliner. Do you suppose that's to hold the roof garnishing trim in place? Seems like a funny way to install it if you ask me.

I agree with douglas on the holes/plugs on the headliner. Ive never seen that on any Pagoda except on the one on Ebay. come to think or it, Ive never seen it on any benz as well.

Though the car looks nice but its always best to see the car up close and not rely on photos.

Have you tried oursl.com ? They do have listings of pagodas for sale.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Hi, Mike,

My car is number 015461 - five younger than yours!  (My build card shows a transfer/deliver date of March 6, 1966, to Paris, France.)  I do not have the flashers, so the change must not have been as simple as starting at a particular serial number.  Perhaps the US got them first?
