Title: 5 speed tranny
Post by: Franz W on August 22, 2006, 03:30:16
Hallo,

i was reading a thread in this forum about a 5 speed ZF transmission, which was sold in June in ebay.
Somebody wrote, that the bell housing of this transmission was made of aluminium and not of cast iron, and that it is hard to find a bell housing.
My question is: Are there different bell housings for 5-speed and 4-speed transmissions ?
I thought, it is always the same bell housing, not depending on what transmission is used.

The 5 speed bell housing is made by ZF and is sand cast aluminum. All MB ( pasenger car ) bell housings are made of aluminum and the newer ones are die castings.

Hallo Benz Dr.,

so is it possible to fit a 5 speed ZF gearbox to the bell housing of a mercedes 4 speed transmission ?

best regards Franz

I doubt it.  The bell housing on the M-B transmission does double duty as the bearing cover for the main and countershaft bearings.  The recesses in the bell housing are of a specific depth to accomodate this.  It would be unlikely that ZF would use exactly the same dimensions.
