Here is my question, I am buying a car off ebay (230sl) and owner tells me the car has not been titled (he is a motorcycle dealer) is this ok? He is third owner. Thanks for any input.

I think he means he hasn't tranferred the title to his name, so it's still under the title from two owners ago. I'm guessing that as long as this title is signed over to you, it's okay. You'll also need a signed bill of sale and it's the seller's duty to produce that.

Also check into the DMV rules and codes for obtaining a 'title-less' car in your state. Almost all the states have different requirements and rules.

In NY state there is no title for a car of this age. The registration certificate itself is the "proof of ownership"

I probably spoke too soon. Yes, as others have said, the car may not have a title at all. It may just have a registration card, depending on the state where it's from and how long the previous owner held the car. Check with the DMV in NC (it's from NC, right?) for rules for transfer of ownership.

The car is from NC The Title (on front) has previous owner date 1993 and on back its transered to current owners business on it and he rides with dealer tags. Thanks again

Be careful... make sure all numbers are the same as on the car... one number off and you're screwed! Call the NC DMV and check the VIN, based on his ability to provite a transferable registration!
