Title: Exhaust System Dropped Down
Post by: Willis69 on July 10, 2006, 14:32:31
Riding home last night on the Henry Hudson Pkwy(near Manhattan) I hear a  noise emanating roughly every 30 seconds from what sounds like the bottom of my car.  As I approach the toll into Manhattan it becomes considerably more frequent.  unfortunately there was no shoulder so I had to drive 3 more miles to get off. At that point I found that my entire exhaust system had come off the hanger and was about 2 inches from the ground, thus the noise(as if I didn't know).  As it was late and I was in Washington Heights, I lifted the tailpipe and tied it w/ some cord I had to the rear bumper and gas tank to anchor and drove it very slowly and parked it in midtown.  This morning I took it to Mercedes Manhattan where they said it would be at least a week, probably more, before they could attend to it and would also have to wait for the vintage parts.  My question is, should I leave it w/ them and let them do the work, or can this type of thing be done by another mechanic and would that mechanic have the right parts?  Someone said they knew a garage where they could tie it up more tightly, then I could get it out to Wolfgang's in Tenafly.  Any recommendations?  To the best of my knowledge, there wasn't any visible damage to the exhaust.

The only thing that could be required is new rubber hangers front to back. I am not sure whether generic ones will do, but they might. I would reckon any mechanic should be able to do the job, or any muffler shop for that matter. Correct MB hangers can be ordered from any of the W 113 specialized parts suppliers.

Good luck with the fix,

I have purchased the exact rubber hangers from Metric Europan Auto Parts - Walked in the door and out in 5 minutes or less (approximate cost was $1.90 per hanger) It seems the a lot of the Europan cars use that same design. In the US we nut & bolt. :(  If you are able to take old one with you this may help - other wise they will look it up for you.  Also you might try your local MB dealer and tell them you are a club member. the part should be the same or near the same cost.
After ordering it from a supplier and waiting several days and paying UPS - It sometime makes sense to purchase locally when you can. It seems that we forget many of the parts in ero cars come from the same vender (ex bosch-Gerling-ect.)Good Luck

If you wind up having to replace it, this is the source many Pagoda owners use for stainless steel replacement exhaust systems...http://www.timevalve.com/

Andrew,

Just about anyone should be able to help you re-attach the exhaust, assuming the exhaust isn't damaged. Try Alan Brownfeld at Brownfeld Auto Service in Chelsea. Not a fancy shop, but more than adequate to get the job done.

In a pinch even some similar rubber "o" ring exhaust hangars will work till you get to a good service shop.  Most decent exhaust shops stock this type of hangar and can install them in minutes. It's not rocket science. The fact that the dealer is wanting you to waite so long for a simple fix is unfortunately an indication that your car is in the wrong place!

Be sure to order the older thick rubber rings.  As I went to the dealer and ordered a set, they turned out to be too soft and thin.  So after a week of suspending the muffler, they dropped down stretching.  I checked the dealer and they said they gave me the generic ones from a W107SL.  They are not the same.  So be sure you get the thick hard rubber ones.  Check the transmission mount to the muffler too(big metal bar bolted twice to the tranny and then to the muffler itself).

I had the same thing happen to me about 2 months ago.  I secured the exhaust by taking a rubber hanger from another area to get me to the autoparts store.  Autozone had them on stock in the exhaust aisle, and they were the thick ones.  Bought a few extras, in case it happened again.
