Just purchased covers for the, wells where the shocks attach in the engine bay(pardon my ignorance) on ebay. I have seen these on very few cars but they add a nicely finished look. They came with clips any suggestion on how to install. thanks peter

Peter,
Those covers will fit just fine, but they're actually not a 280 SL item. They were used on 230 SLs and perhaps even some 250 SLs.
As for installation, I think they just snap into place.

I defer to the expert. I do expect that they will act to prevent accumulation of water/debris in this area with its attendant decay. Its curious they stopped using these, I would imagine long term they would be valuable protective device. Glad to see you back Doug- have you abandoned your quest for a Porsche and are back looking for a 113 with a kinderseat?

I believe these were deleted at the big change in the 250 SL production about VIN ending 2980. I agree that they add a very nice finished look to the engine bay.

I have them on my 250sl (#000114).
I use the LH Side well to carry spare fuses and the old points removed when I installed my Pertronix unit.

Peter,
I'm happy to be here and consider myself to be an enthusiast who is still between Pagodas. No plans for a Porsche, although a 356 will be in the garage at some point. These days I have been looking at roadsters to purchase, but they have all been manufactured by Fisher-Price.... :-)
I do agree that the covers over those subframe mounts/shock towers are a nice touch that was lost on the later cars. I remember always finding sand in that area even after driving on the cleanest roads. Guess that area attracts a lot of road grit.

The price is ridiculous! I just bought a pair from the local dealer for $19.95 each. Okay, they didn't come with the clips. That must be the difference.

Raymond, "ridiculous" is more than correct.
The pair on eBay has now reached $177.50 [:0][:0]
P.T. Barnum must be dancing in his grave.
SLS sells 1 cover for Euro 11 and 1 clip for Euro 0.35.

WOO!! talking about inflaction. I have a set of the sub frame covers and think they are usefull . When washing my SLthat is exactly were the water collects if they are not on. Sound like I my have to duplicate this part as well as the hub-cap stencil.
