Title: 8 drops of magic
Post by: bjudd on June 30, 2006, 21:42:29
on the advice of the benz dr I oiled my 051 distributor in the two places he recommended - 4 drops on the felt inside the shaft - (remove the rotor to access) and 4 more in the little black canister on the outside of the distributor.  It has a small housing (smaller than a thimbal) you rotate to find the lube point.    the car had been misfiring even after a thorough tune up and got progressively worse over the last few months.  at first the misfire was only happening when accelerating rapidly in higher rpms but gradually became more prevelant throughout the powerband.  (the exterior of the cam shaft of the dist. was thoroughly lubed at tune up.)

The performance difference of my car was immediate and drastic.  After oiling these two points on the distributor today the misfire discontinued - even on rapid acceleration.   The engine feels better than ever. Thanks for the great advice Dan.

Hey, and it's 5 speed!
Drive it over here so we can see it on the 29th.

Would we consider this a "try at home" kind of thing? (for the non-mechanic type?) I get very nervous even looking at my distributor. Is there anything that can get misaligned or out of whack by removing cover, rotor etc...

James, the short answer is, no.  (Unless you are really clumbsy.)

Use a screwdriver to pop the two spring clips off the sides.  Lift the cap straight up until it clears the rotor.  With it aside, have a good look. Notice the rotor orientation and pull the rotor straight up & off the shaft.  The oil hole will be obvious.  Don't use too much oil and replace the rotor and cap.

Have fun.

A nice source for a few drops of engine oil is the engine dipstick.
Just let the oil on it run down the stick and soak the felt.

p.s: the oiler on the outside body of the dizzy still need a squirt.

Well, I completed the magic drop task -- seemingly without knocking the distributor off its pins -- so its safe to say, anybody can do it...

I used Naj's trick for the inside drops and a medicine dropper for the outside one. Hard to say if the car runs any better -- it was already pretty happy.

I think I found the "small housing" on the side of the distributor but i needed vice grips and alot of force to get it to rotate. there is a 1/8" hole but it seems to be filled with a hard plastic like substance along witht he end cap. I put a few drops of oil on it anyway.
I thought I would ask first before spinning it right off and shooting a few drops right into the housing body just in case that would not be wise. Thanks for any help Don
