Title: Wood for rear windo

I am working on my hard top while waiting for my injector pump to be reubilt. My wood trim around the rear window was beyond hope. I was going to purchase all the wood trim but My CFO vetoed that idea :D . I orederd the rear windoe wood from Millers and reveived it today. The wood is unfinished. I believe I should put urethane on it before installation. Should I use any stain or just urathane. If you recommend stain what color.

Don't know if this is originality correct, but I would stain it with a FLAT stain in similar color to the wood on the dash/console, which in many cars is a lighter-mid mahoghany type. Urethane may make it a bit glossy for the finish.  But really, if you like glossy rather than flat, then do whatever you want to do -- it's your dollars and your car and it will very likely look great.

Maybe you should get new dash board & storage box wood so you can make sure it all matches.  Stain it all at once with the same stain using the same process.

I would use Minwax brand stain & varnish (premixed type called "polyshades" I think) in a semi-gloss and either Pecan and/or Olde Maple for the light colored wood finish, or red mahogany followed by dark walnut for the dark original finish color. Most interior wood has been refinished in our cars and folks have tended to use a lighter colored finish, or simply clear coated over the original stain after removing the worn out varnish, so matching can be a trial and error process.....fortunately the hard top wood is not situated close to the other wood so an exact match isn't as necessary.

You are probably finished with this project by now, but I put spar varnish on all my car's wood after finishing.  It's probably been a dozen years and the wood looks just the same.

I used min wax Pecan satin finish it looks very nice.It is fairly light. When I do the other wood, if needed it will be far easier to darken this than it would be to lighten if I had used a darker color
