Has anyone ever tried to obtain old MB commercials to add to their collection? I've seen print media ads, but never any video.
Just curious if anyone has collected any of the old video ads before I contact the Classic Center. Wonder if they would release any clips from the archives? Surely they have the old commercials in the vaults?
Comments, thoughts?

Hey Bob
Interesting idea....I thought I read once that MB didn't do much advertizing until the 80's or something and I don't recall ever seeing a television ad from MB...anyone know the real story?

Not really TV commercials, but Videos are contained in at least two DaimlerChrysler sources:
CD-ROM "Die grosse Automobilgeschichte von Mercedes-Benz", United Soft Media, available from DaimlerChrysler; in German language. It contains a vintage Video of the 230SL with driving demonstration by race driver Karl Kling on the Untertuerkheim test track, approx. 3 min (and, of course, a lot of other info about Mercedes and all models since 1886);
DVD "Faszination", 2 DVD set, in German (may also be available in English), with Video of the Pagoda from the 230SL via the 250SL to the 280SL, with some driving footage same as in the other CD, also only a few minutes long.

Here's a point of trivia regarding the MB commercials of the 70s & 80s: the Creative Director was Bruce McCall. Anyone who reads the New Yorker will probably recognize his name as he frequently writes humor pieces, and even creates the occasional painting featured on the cover.

Bob, Hope all is well in Memphis.
I've just discovered YouTube...and there's some good Mercedes stuff on there. Check these out:
A Must See Presentation Film in German: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idfzc1Mqejc
History Commercial that is on the 190 site below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFDKiWIbUTU
Not a Commercial, but great propaganda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcth-hFSwyc
Happy Motoring,

The History Channel's video "Automobiles: Mercedes Benz SL" has some videos from commercials. Although it does not have complete ads, the video is still nice to see and it's interesting to see which demographic they seem to be targeting through the model changes. It would be nice to see the full ads though. Also, if you've ever wondered what the 300sl gullwing frame looks like, they highlight a restoration project and give nice video tour of the frame.
This video was produced in 1994 and on a personal note, it was this show that opened my eyes to the 230 sl. Oh, and the first two videos in the YouTube links in Chris's posting are on the DVD (but in English!)
Hopefully this is the link to the DVD on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Automobiles-Mercedes-Benz-History-Channel/dp/B000FKP08W/sr=8-1/qid=1166981654/ref=sr_1_1/102-3053686-0992926?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

In the early 1970s I started seeing short commericals having to do with safety and the abiliity of Mercedes-Benz new five link rear axle a modified swing axle to avoid accidents and steer around objects like a truck that pulls out , a 250-c was used for this short commerical.I donot think I remember a commerical with just the Pagoda SL. I do think there was one done with the high wall at the test track. The commericals always ended with (Mercedes-Benz does not build conventical cars, and never will) I can tell you back then the commericals Mercedes-Benz made were way ahead of their time. Now we watch BMW commericals and don't raise an eye lash.

If my memory is correct, didn't Bruce McCall write for popular Mechanics and do a story on the 300-SEL 6.3 coining the expression "merely the greatest sedan in the world" Is he still among us? I would sure like to hear his story about the advertising with Mercedes-Benz. Prehaps he still has some old commericals in his archeives????
