What is the correct size, or best fit for a modern battery, to fit a 1970 280sl battery tray. Since many members have changed their's, I thought someone would know the size.

I can't tell the exact size, about 7 3/4 by about 10 3/4, but the cover bracket is in the way.
I have a 1967 250SL, and the battery is a replacement, Varta, part number 003 541 33 01.
It is a Mercedes battery, so it will be a bit pricey.

I used a 24FD which fits perfectly.

I use the Optima gel type battery for two reasons. First, it fits perfectly in the available space, and second, since you have to role the battery around to fit into the W113s (without removing hoses), the gel types don't run the risk of battery fluids running out and damaging the car body. The Optima batteries are completely sealed so can even be installed to operate upside down. The first one I put in lasted 5 years which is very good for batteries in the Tucson heat.

Finney,
What is the exact part number or model number of the battery.
The guy here could not tell me which one to use.
Did you have to modify the cables or holding bracket in any way to fit it?

I talked to a friend of mine who uses the interstate 24R for his 1971 280SL R=reverse terminals works fine and fits. He uses a trickle charger to keep the battery charged when not driving the car.
